ATP Stockholm

The Stockholm Open is professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 250 Series ranked event.

Held in the Swedish city of Stockholm at the Kungliga tennishallen, matches at the event are played on indoor hard courts.

The tournament was inaugurated back in 1969 and the event has been held annually ever since. In the 1970’s a women’s event was held alongside the men’s but for the vast majority of the tournament existed, it has been a men’s only event on the ATP World Tour, as it is currently.

The tournament has undergone many changes down the including venue, ranking, name and surface.

For much of its history, matches have taken place on hard courts but in 1980 and between 1989-1994), matches were played on carpet.

Initially the event was an ITF Independent Tour level event before joining the Grand Prix tennis circuit in 1970 and between 1972-1989). In 1971, it dropped down briefly to a WCT tennis circuit level event.

Between 1990-1994, the tournament was Super 9 level event before becoming an ATP World Series event between 1995-1997.

Between 1998-2008, the tournament became an ATP International Series level event before becoming an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event in 2009.

ATP Stockholm

Although a relatively small tournament on the men’s ATP Tour, it is one of the largest events in Scandinavia and one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the region and that has helped it to attract many star names down the years.

In the tournaments inaugural event in 1969, it was Croatian/ Yugoslav star Nikola Pilic who picked up the first title in Stockholm when he defeated the iconic but controversial Ilie Nastase of Romania.

For much of the first decade of the tournament it was American stars, including Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, and John McEnroe, who dominated the event but Britain’s Mark Cox did pick up the title in 1976.

The first Swedish winner of the countries leading tennis tournament came in 1980, when Bjorn Borg defeated John McEnroe. This kick started a decade of success for Swedish players at the tournament with Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg also winning the event and the likes of Anders Jarryd, Jonas Svenson, Peter Lundgren, and Magnus Gustafsson coming up just short by losing in the final.

The mid to late 1990’s was also a time of success for home favourites with Thomas Enqvist, Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson sharing 5 of the 6 titles between 1995 – 2000, with Thomas Johansson coming in 2nd place in the only year no Swede won.

Over the last couple of decades, the title has been spread out across players from across the globe, with no one player enjoying any level of continued success although Thomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro have won the event on more than one occasion.

In 1975, 1979 and 1980 there was a women’s event held alongside the men’s event, with Britain’s own Virginia Wade winning the inaugural event.

With winners of the singles event at the tournament over the last decade including the likes of Tomas Berdych, Grigor Dimitrov, Juan Martin del Potro and the Swiss superstar Roger Federer, you can be assured or in anots of quality tennis at the event and whilst it is fair to say that the early rounds are a mix of top class stars, up and coming youngsters and journeymen players from across Europe but as the tournament progresses, the top players face off against each and others give some great quality tennis for us all to enjoy.

In recent years, the likes of Juan Martin del Potro and Denis Shapovalov have won the titles in Stockholm although there have been a couple of shock wins since its return to the tour after missing the 2020 season.

In 2021, unknown American Tommy Paul picked up the title whilst Holger Rune of Denmark won the 2022 edition.

The tournament also features a doubles event along side the singles one with a mix of doubles specialist taking place alongside couplings from the singles event but over the year sit has been the specialists who have come out on top including a recent win for the British team of Luke Bambridge and Jonny O’Mara.

Just as with the singles event, all of the doubles matches from the ATP Stockholm Open can be watch online via our live stream partners.
