ATP Vienna

The Vienna Open is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event. As a well-established event with good ranking points on offer, the Vienna Open is able to attract a good mixture of top 10 ranked players and top 50 ranked players which makes for an exciting tournament, all of which you can watch live online.

The tournament is held in the Austrian capital city of Vienna at the Wiener Stadthalle. Established in 1974, the past winners of the tournament are a who’s who of world tennis with the likes of Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic with Britain’s Tim Henman and Andy Murray all picking up the Vienna Open trophy.

Interestingly the most successful Austrian tennis player, Thomas Muster, never won the biggest tournament to be held in Austria during his career but fellow countryman, Jurgen Melzer, did win the Vienna Open twice.

The tournament is able to attract a good mixture of top 10 and top 100 players which makes for an interesting tournament full of high class tennis but also with a chance of a major upset in every round.

The Vienna Open was first held in 1974 and aside from 1975, the event has been held annually ever since although it has undergone numerous changes during that period.

Originally and until 1999, interestingly aside from the very first tournament,, the matches at the ATP Vienna were played on an indoor carpet surface before the change was made to indoor hardcourts in 2000.

The name of the tournament has also changed down the years, mostly due to sponsorship reasons , with past names incoming the Stadthalle Open (1974), the Fischer-Grand Prix (1976-85), the CA-TennisTrophy (1986-2003), the BA-CA-TennisTrophy (2004-2007), the Bank Austria TennisTrophy (2008-2010) and the Erste Bank Open.

The ranking and rating of the tournament has changed almost as often as the events name as it was a ATP World Series event (1990-96), a ATP Championship Series event (1996-97), an ATP International Series Gold event (1998-2008), the ATP World Tour 250 Series event (2009-14) and a ATP World Tour 500 Series event (from 2015).

The early years of the tournament was dominated by American stars, with 7 of the first 9 events won by US players.

The next 10 years was dominated by European stars, with Swedes winning 3 events between 1985 and 1990.

It took until 1999 for a British star to win, when Greg Rusedski defeated Nicolas Kiefer but just like the proverbial London bus, Tim Henman defeated Tommy Haas in the very next tournament.

It took until the year 1988 for the first Austrian star to win the biggest tournament to be held in the Austrian capital when Horst Skoff won an all Austrian final against Thomas Muster. In 2008 Jurgen Melzer defeated Marin Cillic in the final and he then went on to win the tournament the very next year to become the first home favourite to win the event twice.

The quality of matches has really ramped up at the tournament over the last coupe of decades as the ranking points on offer has increased.
This in many ways was kick started by the Swiss superstar Roger Federer who won back to back tournaments in 2002/03. Since then, the likes of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have gone on to win the title in Vienna.

Murray won the last of his 2 titles in 2016 and since then the likes of home favourite Dominic Thiem, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverez and Daniil Medvedev have won the title as European stars have continued to dominate the title scene at Vienna’s leading tennis tournament.

With so many talented players challenging it out for the title at the Vienna Open, it is disappointing that it can be so difficult to watch the action live on British television.

Even if the match you are interesting in watching from the tournament is to be shown on British tv, it will more than likely be on a pay tv sports channel that needs an expensive and ongoing subscription.

Thankfully, there is now a different and in our opinion a much better option as you can now watch all of the action from the ATP Vienna live online via our Vienna Open live stream partners.

No matter if you want to watch the opening match of the tournament or the final or if you want to watch the singles tournament or the doubles tournament, you can.

You do need to be aged 18 or over to be able to watch the action live from Vienna via the great live streaming services of the online bookmakers featured on this page and you also need to have a funded account.
