ATP Winston-Salem Open

The Winston-Salem Open is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a 250 Series ranked event.

The tournament has moved from Long Island and New Haven to its current location at the Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Although the Winston-Salem Open only has a 250 Series ranking on the ATP Tour, it is part of the larger US Open Series which takes place in the run up to the US Open. That allows the tournament to attract some of the world top players with a good mixture of top 50 ranked players and youngster players making their way up through the rankings.

Although the tournament was only established in 2011 in its current location, the event does have a longer history going back to 1981 when it was an exhibition event.

ATP Winston-Salem

The tournament can be known as either the Winston-Salem Open or as the ATP Winston-Salem but no matter what you know the event as, the tournament held on the ATP Tour in North Carolina is one of contrasts and of changes.

It is difficult to talk about the history and prestige of the event as it has not only undergone changes in terms of location and name but also in the structure and set up of the event and the current owners of the tournament, the USTA, have decided to ignore its past history and to make it a completely new tournament.

If you do want to include the history of the event as the history of this event, the inaugural event took place in 1981 when the tournament was simply an exhibition event but it still attracted big names with winners including the likes of Ivan Lendl (of the Czech Republic), Andre Agassi (of the United States of America) and Jonas Svensson (of Sweden).

Back then it was held on Long Island and it stayed there when it moved to the main draw, with winners of the ATP Long Island staged event included Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg (of Sweden), Carlos Moya (of Spain), Yevgeny Kafelnikov (of Russia), Pat Rafter (of Australia), Tommy Haas (of Germany) and Lleyton Hewitt (of Australia).

In 2005, the event moved to New Haven with winners at that venue including James Blake (of the United States of America), Nikolay Davydenko (of Russia), Marin Cilic (of Croatia) and Fernando Verdasco.

The tournament moved to Winston-Salem in 2011 and to a new placement as part of the US Open series of events that act as warm up events for the last Grand Slam of the season.

In its current location and under its current guise, winners of the tournament have including lots of household names including John Isner (of the United States of America), Kevin Anderson (of South Africa), Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut (both from Spain) and Daniel Medvedev (of Russia).

Since that win for the Russian start in 2018, it has been lesser known players who have picked up the title at the event, with Poland Hubert Hurkacz (2019), Belarus’s Ilya Ivashka (2021) and France’s Adrian Mannarino (2022) picking up the Winston-Salem title.

In Winston Salem, the action takes place at the Wake Forest University, in North Carolina, with matches been played on outdoor hard courts.

Whilst the tournament does have a relatively low ranking on the tour, it does offer a good prize fund for a tournament of that level.

That helps the tournament attract big names in need of some game time ahead of the US Open and who are looking for a quality tune up

As with the vast majority of tournaments on the ATP Tour, the Winston-Salem Open also has a doubles event that runs alongside the singles event that features a good mix of those players that specialise in doubles action and singles players who are playing in both the singles and doubles event.

It has been in the doubles event that Brits have had the most success in Winston-Salem with both Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray finishing runner up but it was Inglot who went one further in 2015 when he and partner Robert Lindstedt (of Sweden) defeated Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky (both of the United States of America) to become the first British winner.

No matter if you are wanting to watch the doubles event at the tournament or the singles action, you now can as you can watch exactly what you want to watch from North Carolina live online via the great tennis live streaming services featured on this page.

If you are a fan of tennis, you will know how frustrating it is to try and find smaller tournaments, such as this one, on British television as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv channel, you will more than likely only be able to see the biggest match ups from the tournament.

Thankfully, that needn’t be a problem any more as if you sign up via any of the great live streaming services from the online bookmakers featured on this page, you can select the match you want to watch no matter if it is the opener or the final or if it features a local up and coming star or the number 1 seed.

If you do watch via the bookies on this page, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can watch live tennis not just form this event but from tennis tournament held around the globe all year around.
