Kremlin Cup Tennis

The Kremlin Cup is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.

On the men’s side the event is classed as a ATP World Tour 250 Series whilst for the women’s it is a Premier Tournament on the WTA Tour.

Held in the Russia capital city of Moscow, the Kremlin Cup did take place at the Olympic Stadium between 1990-2018, with the action moving to the Ice Palace Krylatskoye, where matches are played on indoor hard courts.

The tournament was inaugurated in 1990 when matches were originally played on a carpet surface but since 2008, matches are now played on hard courts (RuKorthard surface). Back in 1990 it was the first professional international tournament to be held in Russia when it was a men’s only tournament. It didn’t take long for the event to add a women’s event alongside the men’s when the event became a joint event in 1996.

Down the years the Kremlin Cup has been won by a number of Russian players and still continues to be dominated by local talent but there is a good mixture or in anocal and world stars who appear at the event and whilst it may not attract many non-Russian top 10 tanked players, it does lead to some interesting match ups and lots of shocks.

Both the WTA Moscow and the ATP Moscow offer fantastic tennis action and despite the lack of coverage of the Kremlin Cup on TV, you can watch all of the action live online via our live streaming partners who bring you action from not just this event but also from the majority of events on both the WTA and ATP Tours.

ATP Moscow

The men’s side of the tournament, known as the ATP Moscow, was inaugurated in in 1990, where local star Andrei Cherkasov won the first 2 events before Swiss star Marc Rosset one the next 2.

In a tournament that has been dominated by Russian players, as it has struggled to attracts the big names stars from across the globe, it was Yevgeny Kafeinikov who became the standout players with 5 wins in all but most impressively, all of those wins came in 5 straight years between 1997-2001.

The 2010’s saw a raft of international players win the tournament but in recent years, Russian stars have become the players to beat one more.

WTA Moscow

The women’s side of the event did not get going until 1996 when Spain’s Conchita Martinez defeated Austria’s Barbara Paulus, with the next few winners coming from a range of European players including famous names such as Mary Peirce and Martini Hingis.

It was not until the 2003 edition of the WTA Moscow when a Russian players picked up a win in the Russian capital when Anastasia Myskina defeated Amelie Mauresmo in her first of 2 back to back wins.

Other big names to have won the WTA Moscow tournament at the Kremlin Cup have included top stars including Mary Peirce, Martina Hingis, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, and Julia Gorges whilst US star Serena Williams made it through to the 2007 final in a losing effort to Elena Dementieva.
