WTA Lexington Tennis

The Top Seed Open, also know as the WTA Lexington, is a new professional tennis tournament on the women’s WTA Tour that was established for the 2020 tennis season.

The event takes place at the Top Seed Tennis Club, hence the name of the tournament, in the city of Lexington which is located in the state of Kentucky in the United States of America.

Whilst perhaps not the most well known location in the USA, the city of Lexington is the 2nd biggest in the state and is a well known sporting city for those who follow horse racing.

Known to many and marketed as the “Horse Capital of the World”, the city is linked to not only the racing of horses but also to the training of many of the leading horses in the US including those that partake in the Kentucky Derby, which takes place nearby and which is one of the biggest horse races in the world.

But now it is time for the top sporting action in the city to move away from the turf and onto the outside hardcourts of the Top Seed Tennis Club as the sport of tennis becomes the biggest draw in Lexington, at least for one week, for the WTA Lexington.

The tournament takes over from where the Lexington Challenger event started as there has been a professional tennis tournament held in the city ever since 1997.

Formerly known as the Lexington Challenger, or the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships and Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships due to sponsorship reasons, the event used to be an ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour level event run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

At the ITF level, there was lots of success for Brits with Julie Pullin defeating Abigail Tordoff in an all British final in 1998, Anne Keothavong finishing runner up in 2007 and the same happened to Johanna Konta in 2012 in a losing effort to Julia Glushko.

Overall, it was home stars who dominated the tournament at the ITF level and the crowd in attendance will certainly be hoping that trait continues as the tournament steps up to the WTA International level of competition.

That step up has seen a huge increase in world ranking points on offer and in prize fund, which has gone from just $60,000 at the ITF level to $275,000 for the inaugural WTA International level event, has seen a new international flavour to the tournament with a host of household names joining local stars looking to take advantage of been able to make a name for themselves.

Despite that big step up in the quality of players on offer at the WTA Lexington and the potential for Grand Slam level match ups, especially in the latter stages of the events when it will likely feature top 10 players facing off against each other, it is incredibly difficult to watch the Top Seed Open live on British television.

Even if you have an increasingly expensive and ongoing subscription to pay tv sports channels, the likelihood is that the matches will not be shown and even if they are, it will only be an extremely limited amount.
