WTA Guangzhou
The Guangzhou International Women’s Open is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the WTA Tour where it is a WTA International level event.
The tournament, which is also often referred to simply as the WTA Guangzhou, takes place from the Guangzhou Tianhe Sports enter in the city of Guangzhou where all of the action is played on outdoor hardcourts.
The city of Guangzhou, is also known as Canton or as the Romanised Kwangchow, is the capital of the Guangdong province in southern China.
The city acts as the cultural, financial, and sporting centre of the region which is located along the banks of the Pearl River, 75 miles to the north west of Hong Kong and 90 miles north of Macau.
The city has a long and often turbulent history, as you would expect from the region, but the most important thing about the city for 1 week every year is the sport of tennis and the WTA Guangzhou.
The tournament was first inaugurated back in 2004 and it was fitting to see the leading Chinese tennis star Li Na go on to win the first event and to pull off the biggest win for a Chinese player on a world tennis tour ranking level event.
The second edition of the event was also won by a local star as Yan Zi won the 2005 edition of the WTA Guangzhou.
Other winners of the tournament’s first run at the initial location included a good mix of players from across Europe and Asia winning the title.
In 2015 the tournament moved to the Guangdong Olympic Tennis Centre for 3 years before moving back to the Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center. Jelena Jankovic of Serbia was the most famous winner at this new venue before the biggest winner in the tournaments history came in 2019, when Sofia Kenin of the United States of America defeated Samantha Stosur of Australia to pick up the title.
As is the case on the majority of tennis tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour, the WTA Guangzhou also features a doubles event alongside the singles event.
The doubles action from the tournament can also be watched live online and the action features a mix of doubles specialists as well as singles stars doing double duty.
No matter if you are wanting to watch the singles event or the doubles event, you can do via the great tennis live streaming services found on this page.
If you are a fan of tennis, you will likely know just how frustrating it can be to watch tournaments such as this one live on British television as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that shows tennis, you will likely only be able to watch a select number of matches from this tournament, if at all.
Thankfully, you can pick and choose to watch the action that you want to watch from Guangzhou live via the services listed on this page.
No matter if you want to watch the tournament opener or the final, you can do and perhaps best of all is the fact you can watch your favourite player no matter who they are playing or the match that you are looking forward to no matter if it is the match or the day or if it opens the day’s tennis action.
If you do decide to watch the WTA Guangzhou live online via the streaming services of the online bookmakers on this page, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch live tennis not just from this event but from tennis tournaments held across the globe all season long.

History of the Guangzhou OpenThe history of the Guangzhou Open dates back to 2004, when the tournament joined the WTA Tour calendar as the Guangzhou International Women’s Open. The inaugural edition was held in September 2004, and China’s Li Na became the first singles champion. Her victory was historically important because Li would go on to become the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam singles title, making her Guangzhou triumph an early chapter in one of the most important careers in Chinese tennis. The official WTA tournament history records Li Na as the 2004 champion.
The tournament continued as a regular stop on the women’s professional circuit throughout the 2000s. In 2005, the singles title went to China’s Zheng Yan, before Italy’s Anna Chakvetadze won in 2006. France’s Virginie Razzano followed in 2007, while Russia’s Vera Zvonareva won the 2008 edition. Israel’s Shahar Peer captured the title in 2009. These successive champions illustrate the international character of the tournament from its earliest years.
The 2010s brought another succession of notable champions. American Jill Craybas? The official Guangzhou honour roll instead records Jarmila Groth as the 2010 singles champion, followed by Chanelle Scheepers in 2011 and Hsieh Su-wei in 2012. Zhang Shuai won the title in 2013, Monica Niculescu took the championship in 2014, and Jelena Jankovic won in 2015.
Jankovic’s victory was one of the notable moments in the tournament’s history because the Serbian had already established herself as one of the leading players of her generation. Her Guangzhou title demonstrated the event’s ability to attract players with substantial experience at the highest level of the sport. The tournament was not simply a platform for developing players; it could also provide an opportunity for established stars to add another WTA trophy to their collections.
In 2016, Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko won the singles title. Zhang Shuai then returned to the top of the Guangzhou podium in 2017, securing her second singles championship at the event after her earlier victory in 2013. In 2018, China’s Wang Qiang won the tournament. The 2018 victory continued the strong presence of Chinese players in the tournament’s singles history.
The 2019 Guangzhou International Women’s Open was held from 16 to 21 September at the Nansha International Tennis Center. It was played on outdoor hard courts with a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. American Sofia Kenin won the singles title, defeating Australian Samantha Stosur in the final. The tournament carried a total financial commitment of $426,750 in 2019, according to the WTA’s official tournament record.
Kenin’s Guangzhou victory proved particularly significant in hindsight. She would go on to win the Australian Open singles title in 2020, defeating Garbine Muguruza in the final in Melbourne. Her 2019 Guangzhou championship was therefore part of the run-up to a Grand Slam-winning period in her career. It also reinforced a recurring feature of the tournament: Guangzhou can provide an important stage for players who are about to reach a higher level.
The tournament was not held in 2020, 2021 or 2022, creating a three-year interruption in its WTA history. The official WTA records resume with the 2023 edition, which was staged from 18 to 23 September. The return of the tournament was therefore an important moment for both international tennis in Guangzhou and the wider Chinese tennis calendar.
The 2023 comeback edition produced a home triumph. China’s Wang Xiyu won her first WTA singles title in Guangzhou, defeating Poland’s Magda Linette in the final. Linette entered the tournament as the top seed and reached the championship match, while Wang converted her opportunity into the biggest singles title of her career at that point. The WTA described the victory as Wang’s first WTA title.
The 2024 Guangzhou Open, presented by AVATR, took place from 21 to 27 October and was again classified as a WTA 250 event. It was played on outdoor hard courts at the Nansha International Tennis Center, with a 32-player singles field and 16 doubles teams. The singles title went to Olga Danilovic, who entered the tournament unseeded and defeated Caroline Dolehide 6–3, 6–1 in the final. Danilovic’s victory was her first WTA singles title since 2018 and represented a significant return to the winner’s circle.
The 2024 doubles competition was won by Zhang Shuai and Katerina Siniakova, who defeated Katarzyna Piter and Fanny Stollar in the final. Zhang’s success was particularly fitting given her long association with the Guangzhou event, having previously won the singles title in 2013 and 2017.
In 2025, the Guangzhou Open continued its place on the WTA calendar from 20 to 26 October. The tournament remained a WTA 250 played on outdoor hard courts at the Nansha International Tennis Center. American Ann Li won the singles title, defeating New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 7–6(8–6), 6–2 in the final. It was Li’s second career WTA singles title, following her earlier breakthrough on tour.
The 2025 tournament also produced a strong doubles story. Katarzyna Piter and Janice Tjen won the doubles title after defeating Eudice Chong and Liang En-shuo 3–6, 6–3, [10–5] in the final. The result added another international combination to a doubles roll of honour that has included some of the sport’s leading specialists, including Martina Hingis, Sania Mirza, Elise Mertens, Katerina Siniakova and Zhang Shuai.
Looking ahead, the Guangzhou Open 2026 is scheduled for 26 October to 1 November 2026. The WTA lists it as a WTA 250 tournament on outdoor hard courts, again at the Nansha International Tennis Center, with 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The event is also listed as part of the WTA’s Asian Swing. That places the tournament in an important part of the tennis calendar, when players are looking to collect valuable ranking points and finish their seasons on a high.
Across more than two decades, the Guangzhou Open has therefore developed a distinctive identity within women’s professional tennis. It began with Li Na winning the inaugural title in 2004, built a diverse international roll of honour through the 2000s and 2010s, returned after its three-year interruption with Wang Xiyu’s breakthrough victory in 2023, and then produced further new champions in Olga Danilovic in 2024 and Ann Li in 2025.
That history is what makes WTA Guangzhou more than simply another stop on the tennis calendar. It has been a launchpad for major careers, a showcase for Chinese tennis, a destination for established international players and a tournament where unexpected winners can emerge. From Li Na’s historic first title to the modern-day battles on the Nansha hard courts, the Guangzhou Open has consistently provided a fascinating intersection between Chinese tennis and the global WTA Tour.
