WTA Hiroshima

The Japan Women’s Open Tennis, also known simply as the WTA Hiroshima or the WTA Japan Open, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the main WTA Tour.

The tournament was one of the trailblazers for women’s tennis across Asia having been first established in 2009, when it splintered form the Japan Open which was a tournament for both men and women.

Despite that, the tournament has undergone lots of changes, from venues to host cities and from name to ranking but no matter where the action takes place, you can watch all of the great action live via the tennis live stream services featured on this page.

The tournament started life in the city of Osaka when the action took place on outdoor hard courts at the Utsubo Tennis Center.

The inaugural Japan Women’s Open held in Osaka saw Australia’s Sam Stosur defeat Italy’s Francesca Schiavone to pick up the first ever title at the women’s only Japan Open.

The Aussie star also went on to win both the 2013 and 2014 editions held in Osaka where other title winners included Tamarin Tanasugarn (of Thailand who defeated Kimiko Date-Krumm who was the first Japanese start to reach the final of the Women’s Japan Open), Marion Bartoli of France and Britain’s own Heather Watson.

The event then moved to the Japanese capital city of Tokyo where the action was also played on outdoor hard courts at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park.

The first winner in the capital was Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium who defeated Magda Linette of Poland to win the title.

The other winner sin Tokyo were Christina McHale (of the USA who defeated Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic for the 2016 title) and Zarina Diyas (of Kazahkstan who defeated local star Miyu Kato of Jana for the 2017 title).

The next move for the tournament saw it move to its current home of Hiroshima where the action remains been played on outdoor hard courts at the Regional Park Tennis Stadium.

The first winner in the new venue was Hsieh Su-Wei (of Taiwan, who defeated Amanda Anisimova) but the tournament really announced itself to local fans in the 2019 edition which featured the first ever all Japanese match up in the final and therefore the first ever Japanese winner of the Japan Women’s Open.

It was Nao Hibino who defeated Misaki Doi for the title.

As with the majority of tennis tournaments on the WTA Tour, the WTA Hiroshima also offers live doubles actions for fans in attendance to enjoy and fans across the world to watch live online.

The doubles event features a number of doubles specialists come up against singles stars doing double duty and it has been in this side of the event where local players have had the most success but most importantly, it has also been where British players have had good runs.

In 2012, Heather Watson was the runner up alongside Kimiko Date-Krumm (of Japan) in a losing effort to the American duo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears.

The 2016 edition also saw British players in the final when Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith lost to the Japanese duo of Shuko Aoyama ad Makoto Ninomiya.

No matter if you want to watch the singles event or the doubles event live from Japan, you can do via the great live streaming services featured on this page.
