WTA Osaka

The Pan Pacific Open is one of the most historic tennis tournaments to be held on the Asian continent on the women’s WTA Tour.

Although the tournament is well established, after been inaugurated in 1984, the tournament has undergone a number of changes in terms of location, name, ranking and status but despite that, it has remained a must watch for all tennis fans.

The tournament, which is currently located in the city of Osaka, is hosted by the Utsubo Tennis Center where all of the action is played on indoor hard courts, with the tournament having a Premier level rank on the WTA Tour.

The tournament actually as a longer history than when it started as the Pan Pacific Open as the event lineage can be traced back to 1976, when it was known as the Sillook Open and was played in the capital city of Tokyo.

The first ever winner of the tournament was Betty Stove, of the Netherlands who defeat Margaret Court, of Australia, to pick up the first ever title.

Britain’s own Virginia Wade won the next 2 editions of the event in 1977 and 1978 whilst over winners during this first era of the event included Billie Jean King (of the USA in 1979 and 1980) and Ann Kiyomura (of the US in 1981).

It was the renamed as the TV Tennis Open in 1982 before becoming known as the Queens Grand Prix just a year later in 1983.

It was Bettina Bunge of Germany who won the 1982 edition whilst Lisa Bonder of the USA won the 1983 edition.

The tournament then took on its current name of the Pan Pacific Open in 1984 but back then the action was played on an indoor carpet surface at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, in Tokyo.

The matches now took place on outdoor hardcourts and became a Tier I level event.

This era of the tournament saw Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria win the first 2 editions before household names such as Gabriela Sabatini (of Argentina who won in 1987, 1991 and 1992), Steffi Graf (of Germany in 1986, 1990 and 1994), Pam Shriver (of the USA in 1988), Martina Navratilova (of the USA in 1989 and 1993), Martini Hingis (of Switzerland in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2007), Lindsay Davenport (of the USA in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004) and Maria Sharapova in 2005.

The next big change to the event came in 2008, when the event was on the move again with the tournament now coming from the Ariake Coliseum at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park in the Koto region of Tokyo.

In 2009, the tournament stepped up a to become a Premier 5 level event and one of the biggest tournaments in Asia before dropping back to a Premier level event in 2014.

The winners during the Premier 5 era of the event included more big stars including Maria Sharapova (of Russia in 2009), Caroline Wozniacki (of Denmark in 2010), Agnieszka Radwanska (of Poland in 2011) and Petra Kvitova (of the Czech Republic in 2013).

The winners of the Premier level event included Ana Ivanovic (Serbia in 2014), Caroline Wozniacki (of Denmark in 2016 and 2017) and Agnieszka Radwanska (of Poland in 2015).

From 2018 onwards, the matches have taken pace on indoor hard courts as the event moved to its current home at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.

The first winner of the WTA Osaka was perhaps the most apt winner of the event as it was not just Japans number 1 star but also arguably the most famous sports star from the city who won the event as Naomi Osaka won the title at her namesake event by defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia.

As with the vast majority of tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour, the Pan Pacific Open also offers fans the chance to enjoy top quality doubles action with a number of doubles specialists teams taking on singles players doing double duty.

The event retuned to the tour in 2022 and saw Liudmila Samsonova pick up the title by defeating Zheng Qinwen of China in the final.
