WTA Zhengzhou Open Tennis

The Zhengzhou Open is a professional tennis tournament on the women’s WTA Tour and the great news for fans is that you can watch all of the action live online via our tennis live stream partners.

Despite only been established relatively recently, the Zhengzhou Open has undergone a number of changers and has enjoyed rapid increases in the standard and the level of the event.

Starting off as an ITF level event in 2014, the tournament became a WT 125k level event in 2017 before becoming a WTA Premier level event in 2019, where it replaced the Connecticut Open.

The tournament takes place at the Zhongyuan Tennis Training Base Management Center in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou. All matches take place on indoor hard courts.

The early years of the event were dominated by local talent but the inaugural WTA Premier event showed the increased presence of international stars as Karolina Pliskova defeated Petra Martic.

WTA Zhengzhou

The Zhengzhou Open, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the main WTA Tour where it is often also referred to as simply the WTA Zhengzhou.

As mentioned, the tournament started life as an ITF level event and that meant the tournament was a great place for local stars to hone their skills and it was from China were most of the first winners of the title came from but as the tournament joined the main WTA Tour and as it moved through the ratings, the competition has continued to become much tougher and the participant sat the event are now from across the globe.

All of the action from the event is played on outdoor hard courts at the impressive but not so catchily named Zhongyuan Tennis Training Base Management Center, which as you would expect is based in the city of Zhengzhou in China.

The city is the capital of the Henan Province of China, Zhengzhou is one of the most important cities in the country and acts as one of the National Central Cites which makes it a regional powerhouse politically, economically, technologically, and educationally but for 1 week a year all eyes are on the sport of tennis and on the great action on offer at the WTA Zhengzhou.

The tournament was inaugurated back in 2014 as an ITF level event when local player Zhang Kailin defeated her compatriot Xu Yifan to win the first ever title in Zhengzhou.

The next year saw another all Chinese line up for the final as Wang Yafan defeated Duan Yingying to win the title before the first ever non-Chinese winner in the last ITF event.
In the 2016 final, Anastasia Pivovarova, of Russia, defeat Lu Jingjing, of China to pick up the title.

Between 2017-2018, the tournament stepped up the main WTA tour as a WTA 125k level event and at the new level, the success of local players continued with Wang Qiang defeating Peng Shuai for the 2017 title and Zheng Saisai defeating Wang Yafan for the 2018 title.

The step up to the WTA Premier level of ranking on the tour for the 2019 season saw a new focus on world stars, so it was perhaps no surprise that this was the first final not to feature a Chinese player in it as an all European match up saw Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeat Petra Martic of Croatia for the first title as a Premier level event.

As with the majority of tennis tournaments on the WTA Tour, the Zhengzhou Open also features a doubles event which you can also watch live online.

The doubles tournament feature a mix of doubles specialists and of singles players doing double duty and whilst it has been local players who have enjoyed the most success sin the doubles as well as the singles, it has been much more competitive, with only 1 all Chinese match up in the final.

It has also been where a British star has enjoyed the most success when Naomi Broady, alongside partner Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium came up just short in a losing effort from the 2018 final against local players Duan Yingying and Wang Yafan.
