Villarreal v Valencia
Villarreal welcome their near neighbours and big city rivals Valencia to El Madrigal for a derby match up that is always a highlight of the season for both sets of fans.
Matches between the sides known as the ‘Derbi de la Cominitat’ as both sides are part of the Valencian Community in the province of Castellon.
For Villarreal, this is an opportunity for them to welcome their big city rivals and to show that a small-town club can still match them in the Spanish topflight.
The differences between the club can be seen in the fact that Villarreal are a club with limited support and finances that have continued to punch above their weight in Spain and over the past couple of decades, they have enjoyed success on the continental stage.
Their rivals, Valencia CF, have on the other hand struggled over the past couple of decades, have suffered from indifference from their owners and have under-performed both domestically and especially continentally.
The mid-table in Spain is often tight and the points between the sides can come down to who win or loses the matches between the sides so whilst there is lots of local pride on the line in this one, it is also a match that will likely have a huge say on the overall outcome of each team’s season.

Stadium
The compact Estadio de la Ceramica does resemble Valencia’s home ground in some ways, as the stands are steep and the fans are close to the action but with a capacity of around 23,000, it is only around half the size of their near neighbours and that means the away side will have to adapt.
Despite the small capacity, the fans at El Madrigal are known for creating a great atmosphere and that will be especially true on derby day when the stands will be packed and the ground will be loud throughout.
Why You Should Watch
Everybody loves a good underdog story and this in overall terms in one such story as the small-town club welcomes their big city neighbours who have a long history of success.
With the struggles of Valencia recently, it may not be the same level of minnow versus giants on the field but that just makes it more of an intriguing matchup for neutrals.
If you are a fan of either side, you will of course want to watch any match that your side plays in but as a derby match, this is one that you simply cannot miss and will be one of the first games that you for when the new fixture list is released.
For neutrals, these are often intense and action-packed games that sadly often go overlooked in the UK.
Where You Can Watch
Fans of Villarreal, Valencia and Spanish football in general will know just how difficult, frustrating and often expensive a challenge it can be to watch a match such as this on UK television.
Even if you have an ongoing and expensive subscription to a pay tv sports channel that has the rights to show Spanish football, only a select number of matches are chosen to be shown and it is most often the case that it only the matches featuring the ‘big 3’ in Spain that are shown.
That leaves fans of teams such as these 2 or fans of big matches that are derbies or hugely important to a teams season missing out but now that never needs to be the case once again.
If you are a fan of Spanish football, the great news is that you can now pick and choose to watch the action that you want to watch as all of the incredible live streaming services that appear on this page allow you to watch La Liga live online.

History
Villarreal v Valencia is one of the most intriguing regional rivalries in Spanish football. The two clubs are separated by relatively little distance in the Valencian Community, but there has never been much separation when it comes to competitive spirit. When Valencia travel south to face Villarreal, the fixture usually carries plenty of local pride, and the history of matches at Villarreal’s home ground shows just how difficult the trip can be for the visitors.
Villarreal’s home stadium, now known as the Estadio de la Cerámica and formerly El Madrigal, has hosted decades of memorable meetings between the two sides. Villarreal have generally enjoyed the advantage on home soil, particularly in La Liga. Before the 2025 meeting, Villarreal’s own historical review noted that the fixture was set to be their 25th league meeting against Valencia at home, underlining just how regularly these clubs have crossed paths in Vila-real.
Looking back at the league record, Villarreal have traditionally had the upper hand in this particular version of the rivalry. Earlier records showed Villarreal with nine home victories, four draws and four Valencia wins from the first 17 league meetings at the stadium. In other words, Valencia have certainly enjoyed some success, but travelling to Villarreal has rarely felt like a relaxing Sunday afternoon for Los Che.
Memorable Villarreal Home Wins Against Valencia
Some of the biggest Villarreal v Valencia matches have produced emphatic home victories. One of the standout results came in January 2008, when Villarreal produced a superb 3-0 victory during the season in which they eventually finished runners-up in La Liga. Robert Pirès, Joan Capdevila and Nihat all found the net as Manuel Pellegrini’s side underlined their quality. It was the sort of performance that leaves the away supporters wondering whether the journey home might be slightly longer than usual.
Villarreal followed that with another impressive home win in May 2009, beating Valencia 3-1. They also claimed a 2-0 victory in May 2010, before producing their biggest home league win over Valencia in the period covered by the historical records: a 4-1 success in October 2013. That match included two goals from Giovani dos Santos, with Ikechukwu Uche and Hernán Pérez also scoring for the hosts.
More recently, Villarreal have continued to make home advantage count. They won 1-0 in December 2015, 1-0 again in May 2018, 2-0 in April 2022 and 1-0 in March 2024. These results demonstrate a change in style as much as anything: Villarreal have not always needed a goal-fest to beat Valencia, with several victories coming through disciplined, narrow wins.
Valencia’s Victories at Villarreal
Despite Villarreal’s strong home record, Valencia have enjoyed some notable successes at La Cerámica. Their most memorable victories include a 2-0 win in February 2002, a 1-0 victory in January 2007 and a 1-3 triumph in November 2014. Valencia also won 0-2 in January 2017, proving that the home advantage is far from an automatic three points.
The 2014 victory was particularly striking because Valencia scored three times away from home, while the 2017 success came through goals from Carlos Soler and Santi Mina. These results remain important reminders that Villarreal v Valencia has rarely been a straightforward fixture, even when the historical numbers favour the hosts.
Recent Villarreal v Valencia Matches
The recent head-to-head record at Villarreal’s home ground has swung strongly towards the hosts. Villarreal beat Valencia 2-0 in 2020, 2-1 later that year, 2-0 in 2022, 1-0 in 2024 and most recently 2-1 on 22 February 2026. The latest meeting at the Estadio de la Cerámica saw Villarreal come from behind after Largie Ramazani gave Valencia the lead, with Santi Comesaña and Pape Gueye turning the match around for the home side.
That recent sequence highlights the continuing importance of home advantage in Villarreal v Valencia matches. From dramatic victories and derby tension to narrow wins and the occasional Valencia surprise, this fixture has built a fascinating history at Villarreal’s home ground. For supporters searching for Villarreal v Valencia history, head-to-head statistics or past results, one thing is clear: La Cerámica has usually been a rather uncomfortable destination for Valencia.
