Whilst many know the club as PSV Eindhoven or simply as PSV, the clubs full name is Philips Sports Vereniging (translated into English as Philips Sport Union) which is taken from the clubs formation way back in 1013 when it was set up to be a team for employees of the Philips company.

Since those days, the cloud have moved about as far away from a company side as they have not only become one of the biggest teams in Dutch football but they have spent many years competing in the top European competitions.

The club have retained strong links to the Philips organisation however, with joint management, shared technology and the company also remain the major sponsors for the club.

History

The foundations of the club can be based in the Philips conglomerate as it was they who started up a football club for their employees to have an activity to do.

Originally, the club were called Philips Elftal and played at the Philips Sportpark, which was located on the same location as their current ground.

Financial troubles and workers strikes led to the demise of the club in 1913 but a new club, named Philips Sport Vereniging, were formed at the end of August that year.

In 1916, the club changed name to PSV or Philips Sport Vereniging (Philips Sports Assocation) and the clubs first ever game saw them take on Willem II Reserves in September 1915 in a match they would lose 3-2.

The club did enjoy early success and gained promotion that and they were promoted in 1918 and 1921 as well and therefore reaching the Eerste Klasse, the then Dutch top flight.

That only lasted for one season as the team were relegated but they were instantly promoted and since then, they have remained in the top tier of football in the Dutch leagues.

In 1929, the club won the district league and on the back of that, they won the championship play-off to be declared the league champions and national champions in the Netherlands for the first ever time.

The war years hit the club hard but they started to regroup in the 1950’s including been the first Dutch club to enter the European Champion Clubs Cup.

Up until the 1960’s, the club only picked players from, or with strong links to, the Brabant region of The Netherlands but in the 60’s, the club changed their policy to select players from across the country in the hope of improving their on the field performances.

It did lead to improvements for much of the latter part of the 60’s and the 70’s including improvements in European competitions highlighted by their 1978 camepaign, when they defeated Bastia over two legs to pick up the UEFA Cup and to win the clubs first European Trophy.

Unfortunately, the club couldn’t progress from their as infighting between players and management led to a period of change and by the mid 1980’s, a new focus on players with flair was brought in and that led to the signings of the likes of Ruud Gullit and Eric Gerets.

That helped the club return to the top of the table but infighting was still happening and Gullit was sold to Milan but Ronald Koemen joinrom for PSV and things started to take a turn for the worse.

One big improvement was the arrival Guus Hiddink who quickly turned things around and by the 1987-88 season, the club enjoyed its best season to date with a comfortable win in the league, a win in the Dutch Cup and at the end of the season, they faced Benfica in Stuttgart in the final of the European Cup and after a goalless match, Eindhoven won on penalties to become the Champions of Europe for the first ever time.

The next season they did the double and whilst they have continued to enjoy lots of domestic success but they have struggled on the European stage as, like all over teams in smaller leagues across Europe, the club have now become a developer of talent.

That tends to mean that when they have success domestically, it alerts the biggest clubs across the continent and the club have to sell their better players, so there domestic form takes a dip and the cycle continues.

After a poor run of form after winning the 2017-18 Eredivisie, the club won the Dutch Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield double in the 2021-22 season.
