ATP Barcelona
The Barcelona Open, also known as the ATP Barcelona, was first established way back before the Open Era in 1953 and whilst many tournaments of that vintage were dominated by local players, it is perhaps surprising that in the tournaments held before the Open Era, there were only 3 winners from Spain (Andres Gimeno in 1060, Manual Santana in 1962 and Juan Gisbert in 1965).
It was stars from across the Atlantic that dominated the early years of the tournament with the first 5 titles one by stars from the USA including Vic Seixas who won the inaugural Barcelona Open by defeating Enrique Morea of Argentina in the final to pick up the first ever title.
Australian superstar Roy Emerson won the most titles in this era of the event by winning the title in 1961, 1963 and 1964.
During the Open Era, the tournament has undergone a number of changes to it s ranking including becoming a Grand Prix circuit event between 1970-1989, aside from 1971 when it dropped onto the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit, although the event was open to all players making that ranking somewhat null and void.
Amongst the stars of the sport to win during this era of the event were Ilie Nastase (of Romania who won in 1973 and 1974), Bjorn Borg (of Sweden who won in 1975 and 1977), Ivan Lendl (of the Czech Republic who won in 1980 and 1981) and Mats Wilander (of Sweden who won in 1982,1983 and 1984).
It was local star Manual Orantes who won the one of 1971 edition on the WCT circuit.
The 1990’s saw a number of stars win the tournament including Richard Krajicek (of The Netherlands in 1994), Thomas Muster (of Austria in 1995 and 1996) and Todd Martin (of the USA in 1998).
But it was in the 2005 and 2010’s when the tournament became completely dominated by local star Rafa Nadal including his run of 5 straight wins between 2005-2009.
As is the case on the majority of ATP Tour events, the Barcelona Open also features a doubles event and it has been on this side of the draw that British stars have enjoyed the most success.
In 1959, Brit Jaroslav Drobny teamed with Budge Patty of the USA to defeat the all-Australian duo of Mervyn Rose and Warren Woodcock to pick up the title.
Neil Broad, alongside partner Piet Norval of South Africa were the runner sup in 1996 to Luis Lobo of Argentina and Javier Sanchez of Spain.
In more recent times, Jamie Murray has been runner up twice, in 2015 alongside John Peers of Australia and in 2019 alongside Bruno Soares of Brazil.
The doubles event features a mix of both doubles specialists and singles stars who are playing both events and the great news is that you watch all of the doubles action live online.
The 2022 edition of the event, there was lots to cheer for home fans as the men’s singles final featured a battle between the Spanish duo of Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta, with Alcaraz coming out on top with a straight sets win.
The men’s doubles event saw the German pairing of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies defeat the pairing of Wesley Koolhof of The Netherlands and Britain’s Neal Skupski.
