Watch Halle Open

The ATP Halle Open, formally known as the Gerry Weber Open due to sponsorship reasons, is a professional tennis tournament that is part of the men’s ATP World Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event.

The tournament is played on outside Grass Courts, with the tournament seen by many as the main warm up event for the Wimbledon Championships, along with Queens Club.

The Halle Open, held in the German town of Halle in the North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, has a long history going back to the early 1990’s. Since then the tournament has continued to grow and thanks to the likes of Roger Federer making this their main Grass Court tournament, the Halle Open has developed a following across the world. The Swiss superstar has dominated the event throughout his career, whilst German players have also enjoyed success at home.

Over the years the number of grass court tournaments has diminished significantly as tournament after tournament changes to hard courts.

Whilst this makes sense from a financial point of view, as you can reuse the courts for other things throughout the year and the ongoing costs of a hard court are much lower than the high costs of looking after a grass court but it does mean that fans of tennis miss out on something and that there is now a dearth of grass court specialists.

Aside from Queens Club and the Wimbledon Championships in London, there is one venue and one tournament that continue to enjoy success as a grass court tournament and that is the Halle Open held in the Westfalen region of Germany.

The tournament takes place at the impressive Gerry Weber Stadion which is one of the largest tennis stadiums outside of the Grand Slams and is capable of hosting over 12,000 fans.

The court is also one of the most high-tech on the ATP Tour as it features a roof that is capable of been closed in just 88 seconds and it is also capable of hosting other sporting events such as handball, basketball, volleyball, and boxing.

First inaugurated in 1993, the event was categorised as an ATP World Series event before becoming an ATP International Series level event in 2000.

In 2009 it became an ATP World Tour 250 Series event before been upgraded to an ATP World Tour 500 Series level event.

As well as been one of the highest ranked and historic grass court events on the tour, the Halle Open also offers a large prize fund so it is no surprise that the tournament as attracted many great stars to the event over the years.

Amongst the big names to do well at Halle down the years are Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Roger Federer, Mardy Fish, Marat Safin, Tomas Berdych, Marcos Baghdatis, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Tommy Haas, Novak Djokovic, Andreas Sappi, Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and David Goffin.

As the Swiss superstar has done at so many tournaments across the globe, Roger Federer has been the dominant force at the ATP Halle Open. Between 2003 and 2006, Fed won 4 straight events and came close to matching that between 2013-2015 when he won 3 straight.

In 2019, he went on to pick up his 10th victory at the event to really highlight his dominance and also the incredible longevity of Roger Federer.

Roger Federer also picked up the doubles title at the 2005tourment when he and partners Yves Allegro defeated Joachim Johansson and Marat Safin.

The former Russian star, Yevgeny Kafelniko was the most successful players in the 1990’s but could only pick up 3 titles, starting in 1997 and finishing in 2002, the year before Federer picked up his first title.

Unfortunately British stars have struggled for success down the years, in either the singles or doubles events, but with the home nations players focus been on the Queens Club tournament in London, that is not too surprising.

The 2022 edition saw a minor shock in the singles final when 5th seed Hubert Hurkacz defeated the number 1 seed and number 2 ranked player in the world, Daniil Medvedev.
