Wimbledon Tennis

No matter if you call it The Championships, The Wimbledon Championships or like most people, simply Wimbledon, the grass court tennis tournament held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is the oldest tennis tournament in the world.

Wimbledon is one of the 4 Grand Slam (Majors) tennis tournaments held each season and is the only one held on Grass courts making it the most prestigious grass court tournament in the world.

Beginnings

First held at the current venue in 1877, Wimbledon has the longest history of any current tournament and thanks to its lack of heavy advertising and strict rules on players clothing, the tournament stands out when compared to any other, which makes it the most popular for many fans and players alike.

Despite the tournaments getting many hours of TV time, it can still be difficult to find players that aren’t ranked in the top 10, so if you favourite is playing on an outer court, never miss any of the action by watching Wimbledon live online.

Better Than Television

Our live streaming partners feature each and every match live from Wimbledon and you can pick and choose which match you like to watch via their live streaming console.

Over the past decade or so the complex at Wimbledon has completely changed with a state of the art roof added to centre court, a brand-new court no.2 added to create new stadium standard show court and recently new court no.3 and court no.4 have been added with greater facilities and capacity for fans.

Iconic Grounds

The large grassy hill in the complex has also become an spectator viewing area with a large screen showing the main game from the show courts to the thousands of fans watching live. Towards the end of the day and at the end of the tournament when matches on the outside courts feature less, the hill becomes the place to be and is a place for fans to enjoy the action together. This unofficial fan park has been given many names over the years such as ‘Rusedski Ridge’, ‘Henman Hill’ and ‘Murray Mound’ but officially the name is the Aorangi Terrace.

Whilst sunscreen, strawberries and cream and floppy hats are all associated with the summer tournament, rain is also never too far away. The good news for fans is that even when the heaven’s open, there is still live action from Wimbledon thanks to the roofed centre court, so there is always some action live online via our live streaming partners. It also allows matches to go latter into the night as the roof can be closed and the lights turned on.

With matches now able to be played from mid-morning to 11pm, make sure you miss none of the action by registering with our live streaming partners.

Iconic Championships

The Wimbledon Grand Slam is a fantastic mixture of history and modernism. The branding is kept to a minimum, the players still have to wear a majority white outfit with logos and sponsors again kept to a minimum and there is none of the shouting, loud adverts and flashing lights of other majors. The sponsorships that do appear, such as Slazenger’s for the tennis balls and Robinsons for drinks are long standing partnerships which also add to the history of the event.

This all adds to the Wimbledon experience which, along with the fact it is the only Grass Court Grand Slam, makes the tournament unique on both the ATP and WTA Tours and helps explain why the tournament tis the favourite of many players and most fans alike.

The great news for fans is that as well as the special atmosphere and ambience on show at Wimbledon, the action on court tends to be amongst the best as well. The speed of the Grass Courts and the unique way you need to play the surface makes the top players step up their play and it also creates opportunities for Grass Court specialists and for those who may struggle on other surfaces.

That creates an unpredictable tournament, on both sides of the draw and as with anything unpredictability leads to excitement. If you think back over the best tennis matches of the last couple of decades the majority of those will come from Wimbledon with the finals between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer taking the sport to a whole new level.

History

The Championships are known as the most historic tennis tournament on the calendar and that is for good reason as the All England club’s existence can be dated all of the way back to July 1896, when it was known simply as the All England Croquet Club.

The Start of Tennis

As you may expect, the club was originally set up for the sport of Croquet but by 1876 the newly developed sport of Lawn Tennis, devised as an outdoor version of real Tennis, was added to the club and just a year later, the clubs name became the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club.

On the back of that change, the club created the first Lawn Tennis Championships and helped to develop a new code of laws after taking over the running of the sport from the MCC.

Those rules have remained remarkably similar to what are used to this very day and of course that early tournament has grown and developed into the Grand Slam major that we all love.

The inaugural edition of the Wimbledon Championship took place in 1877 where only the Gentlemen’s singles event was played and men had to pay 22 guineas to enter.

British Dominance

The first ever winner at Wimbledon was Spencer Gore who defeated William Marshall in an all-British final and that set the scene for the 28 finals that featured only British participants.

The first non-Brit to make it through to the final was Norman Brookes of Australia, when he finished runner up in 1905 but he went one better in 1907 when he became the first non-Brit winner by defeating Arthur Gore.

The first final to not feature a Brit came in 1913 when Anthony Wilding of New Zealand defeated Maurice McLoughlin of the USA.

The competition took a break for much of the 1910’s due to the First World War and upon the recommencement of action, British players took a back seat as American, Australian and most dominantly French stars took control of the title in South West London.

Return of British Success

It took until the mid-1930’s for more British success when Fred Perry won 3 straight titles between 1934-36 but the rest of the 30’s saw US players enjoy the most success.

After another break for the 2nd World War, it was US stars who continued to enjoy success before Australian players became dominant in the men’s side of the draw.

Open Era

In the 1970’s, Bjorn Borg of Sweden dominated things by winning every tournament between 1976-1980, with the rest of the 1980’s and 1990’s also dominated mostly, by US stars.

New Millenium

Since the turn of the Millennium, it has been the big 4 European stars of Roger Federer, Rafael Nada, Novak Djokovic, and Britain’s own Andy Murray who have dominated things in the men’s singles.

The women’s event started in 1884 and in a similar fashion to the early years of the men’s event, it was British women who dominated tournaments including Maud Watson who won the first 2 titles.

End of British Dominance

The first non-Brit to reach the final was May Sutton of the USA who won the 1905 to start 3 straight final appearances.

After Brit’s dominated things from their until the outbreak of the First World War, it was France’s Suzanne Lenglen who dominated things by winning 5 straight titles before Kitty McKane of Britain ended her run.

From the mid-1930’s to the end of the 1950’s it was US stars who continued to dominate things either side of the 2nd World War before the title moved around a bit more in the 1960’s with winners from the US, Australia, Brazil and home favourites.

Open Era

At the start of the Open Era, in the late 1960’s, it was stars from across the Pond who continued to excel on Grass and that continued until the late 1980’s when it was Germany’s Steffi Graf who dominated with a total of 7 wins.

New Millenium

The 2000’’s saw US stars return to the top before European stars took over although the 2021 edition was won by Ashleigh Barty of Australia.
