Queens Club Tennis

The Queens Club Champions, known as a number of corporate names due to sponsorship reasons and simply as Queens Club by many fans, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event.

As one of the leading warm up events for the Wimbledon Championships and of course with the event taking place just a few miles from the Grand Slam, Queens Club attracts many of the world leading players.

The tournament takes place on outdoor Grass Courts at Queens Club in the West Kensington borough of London. The tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious events on the tennis calendar with the first edition of Queens Club been held way back in 1890.

Originally the event was called the London Grass Court Championships before changing its name to the London Championships and then to the Queens Club Championship after the venue the tournament is held at.

Queen’s Club takes place every year in the gap between the end of the French Open and the start of the Wimbledon Championship. The tournament has attracted the best of the best throughout its history with the likes of Andy Murray, Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick excelling at the event over the past couple of decades.

ATP London

Outside of the iconic Wimbledon Championships, the Queen’s Club Championships is arguably the biggest tennis tournament to be held annually in Britain and it is one of the biggest grass court tournaments in the world.

Held in the West End of London, the tournament offers players to base themselves in the city ahead of Wimbledon and also enjoy a good quality of tournament in preparation for the only major to be held on grass courts.

The tournament also offers good ranking points, as an ATP World Tour 500 Series level event since 2015 and with a large prize fund it will come as no surprise that the field at the Queens Club Championships, also known simply as the ATP London, offers a hugely impressive line-up of stars to match any tournament outside of the Grand Slams.

The tournament can be traced back to 1881, when the action took place at the London Athletic Club, as you would expect from what was a local tournament, all of the finals in those early years were all British affairs.

That continued with the move to Queens Club, with the first 14 finals featuring all British line ups.

The first non-home winner was Holcombe Ward, from the USA, who defeated fellow American Beals C Wright in a walkover.

After a break for World War 1, the tournament was dominated by locals and every increasingly American stars but interestingly the last event to be run before the Second World War was won by a German player by the name of Gottfried von Cramm.

After the war years, it was Australians who dominated the event with household names such as Rod Laver and Roy Emerson amongst 11 Aussies to win the event in the 1950’s and 60’s.

With the advent of the Open Era, starting in 1968, the tournament has grown in competition with players from across the globe winning the event.

The quality of any tournament can often be seen by the players who have gone on to win the tournament and the ATP London truly has a who’ who list of winner to rival any other tournament.

Amongst the big names to win the West London tournament in the pen Era include the likes of Jimmy Connors (the United States of America), Ilie Nastase (Romania), John McEnroe (the United States of America), Boris Becker (Germany), Ivan Lendl (then Czechoslovakia), Stefan Edberg (Sweden), Pete Sampras (the United States of America), Leyton Hewitt (Australia), Andy Roddick (the United States of America), Rafael Nadal (Spain), Marin Cillic (Croatia), Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria), Feliciano Lopez (Spain) and Britain’s own Andy Murray who has been one of the most dominant players at the event.

As with the majority of tennis tournament son the ATP Tour, the Queens Club tennis tournament also features a doubles event where doubles specialists come up against singles stars who are doing double duty.

In 2020, the tournament didn’t take place for the first time since the 1970’s but on its return, it was Matteo Berrettini of Italy who made the tournament his own by winning in both 2021 (defeating Cameron Norrie) and 2022 (defeating Filip Krajinovic).
