Laver Cup Tennis

The Laver Cup is a professional tennis tournament that features on the men’s ATP Tour but unlike the majority of tournaments that features players representing only themselves in a singles event or alongside a partner in a doubles event, the Laver Cup sees them represent a team and millions upon millions of fans.

That is because the Laver Cup is the tennis worlds version of the Ryder Cup in Golf or the Exiles concept in Rugby League where players come together to represent, in this tournaments case, Europe or the Rest of the World.

These teams are given the inventive name of Team Europe and Team World and feature the top ranked players from the ATP Tour.

Whilst the event is now a fully sanctioned tournament on the main tour, it does not carry any award of ranking points but all of the players do get to play a meaningful tournament in big arenas in front of large crowds and with a guaranteed appearance fee.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that few players find an excuse to not participate in the event and that leads to a unique and exciting tennis tournament that offers something different form the majority of events on the tour.

The great news for all tennis fans is that you can now easily and safely watch all of the action live via the streaming services found this page.

ATP Laver Cup

The Laver Cup is made of 2 teams (Team Europe v Team World), who are made up of 6 stars each who play for a winning total of 13 points which are available to win in 9 singles matches and 3 doubles matches played over 3 days.

Teams are awarded 1 point for a win on day 1, 2 points for a win on day 2 and 3 points for a win on day 3.

Each player has to play at least one match where the action is played over best of 3 scoring system with a 10-point tiebreaker in the final set if needed.

The tournament was established back in 2017 and for the first couple of editions in was an exhibition event before joining the main ATP Tour in 2019.

The event is named after named after the legendary Australian star Rod Laver and was established by Roger Federer management company Team8 and former Brazilian player Jorge Paulo Lemann.

The teams, just as in the Ryder Cup, also have team captains, with Bjorn Borg (Team Europe) and John McEnroe (Team World) been the first captains for their teams.

The inaugural event was held in 2017 at the 02 Arena in the Czech capital city of Prague when Team Europe defeated Team World by 15-9.

The European team consisted of Rafa Nadal (Spain), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Alexander Zverev (Germany), Marin Cilic (Croatia), Dominic Thiem (Austria) and Tomas Berdych (Czech Republic).

The World team consisted of Nick Kyrgios (Australia), Denis Shapovalov (Canada) and Sam Querrey, John Isner, Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe (all USA).

Since then the tournament has swapped between host venues in Europe and outside of Europe with Chicago (USA), Geneva (Switzerland) and Boston (USA) all been awarded the hosting rights.

Other stars to have played at the event other the years have included Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria), David Goffin (Belgium), Kyle Edmund (Great Britain), Stefan Tsitsipas (Greece and Fabio Fognini (Italy) for Team Europe and Milos Raonic (Canada), Taylor Fritz (United States of America), Kevin Anderson (South Africa) and Diego Schwartzman (of Argentina) for Team World.
