Milos Raonic
Milos Raonic started to make a name for himself in tennis circles at a young age when he enjoy some success at the junior level including in doubles action with his fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil. He made his debut in a professional tournament at the age of 14 at an ITF event in Toronto and continued to play at this level until receiving a wildcard into the qualification process for the Canadian Open, but he fell short in 2008 of making his debut in an ATP level event for the first time. Performances such as those did grab the attention of big USA universities who offered him scholarships but with a pure determination to play professional tennis, he turned them down and joined the professional ATP Tour in 2008. It was a relatively slow start to the professional tour however, with Raonic continuing to ply his trade at Futures and Challenger level events in the main. He won his first ITF Futures event in Montreal in 2009 and in the same year he started to play in ATP Tour level events. He continued to play doubles matches, still alongside Pospisil and it was at the 2010 Canadian Open when the 2 young Canadians made the step up from promising youngsters to players to look out for when they defeated the pairing of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, then ranked number 1 and 2 in the world. This seems to have been just the boost in confidence he needed as he made his debut at his first Grand Slam later that year at the US Open. By the end of the next season, he had broken into the top 25 players in the ATP Tour world rankings and had picked up his first ATP level title at the Pacific Coast Championships. This win made him the first winner of an ATP Tour level event to be born in the 1990’s. His rise through the rankings continue with strong performances at the Grand Slams, including a place in the final of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships and a rise to number 3 in the world that same year. With him looking likely to be the next breakthrough star of the ATP Tour, he was sadly struck down by a number of injuries and this have continued to be an ongoing issues for the big serving right-handed Canadian. At 6ft 5 inches tall and possessing a lot of power, you may expect him to hide behind a big serve and whilst that is his main strength, he does have the groundstrokes to back it up. On his day, Milos Raonic is one of the top stars of the sport and can be a match for anybody, so it is no surprise that so many fans love to watch him live in action but unfortunately it is often a difficult challenge to watch his matches on British television.
