Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios was born in the Australian capital city of Canberra which is perhaps more famous for been home to the Canberra Raiders Rugby League team but it is also home to the Australian Institute of Sport and it is the where the young Nick Kyrgios learnt the sport of tennis and really developed into the fantastic player he is today. The unquestionable talent of Kyrgios was shown at a young age when he won an ITF Junior tour title in Fiji at the age of 15. The next year he dedicated more time to the tour and even made his junior grand slam debut at the 2011 Australian Open. He soon turned pro and played his first professional tennis tournament at the 2013 Brisbane International and it was at home where his first Challenger Tour level victory occurred when he won the Sydney Tennis International title at the age of 17. Soon after he featured in the main draw for a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open and after defeating Radek Stepanek in the first round he not only picked up his first win at the TP Tour level but he also announced himself to the general tennis fans. British fans got to see the quality of Nick Kyrgios at first hand for the first time at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships when he reached the quarter-final stage, a run that saw him defeat the world number one Rafa Nadal to become the first debutant to reach the quarter finals since Florian Mayer in 2004. From there is world rankings continue to improve, topping off at number 13 in the word in October 2016 and he also continued to pick up titles and trophies along the way. Whilst there can be no denying just how much quality the star has, he is sadly just as famous for his on the court and off of the court actions that often undo all of the quality he processes. At the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, he was booed off of the court after ‘tanking’ in his match with Richard Gasquet which saw him refusing to return serves. At the 2015 Rogers Cup, microphones picked up Nick Kyrgios ‘talking smack’ about the personal life of his opponent Stan Wawrinka and he was also fined for verbally abusing a spectator in Shanghai. There have been a number of other incidents that have led to fines down the years including imitating crude acts with a water bottle, unsportsmanlike conduct, and multiple cases of abuse, both verbal and destruction of objects around the court. As one of the most divisive characters on the tour, with some fans and pundits loving him and some fans and pundits hating him, there can be no denying that the Australian is box office so it will come as no surprise that many fans love to watch his matches. Sadly, that is mostly down to never knowing when the next childlike tantrum will occur as it is for watching the quality of his tennis and for someone so gifted, that is a sad state of affair and hopefully he will grow up and become the tennis great he could easily be. If you are looking to watch the mercurial Nick Kyrgios live, the great news is that it has never been easier. Whilst many of is matches from major events are shown live on British tv, his matches at smaller levels events are often overlooked and even if the matches are shown live, you will need to have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel.
