World Tennis Tournament

The Rotterdam Open, also known as the World Tennis Tournament, is a professional tennis tournament which features on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event.

Match are played on indoor hard courts at the Ahoy Rotterdam in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands (Holland).

The tournament has a history going back to 1972, when the iconic Arthur Ashe picked up the first ever title.

The tournament is one of the biggest indoor event son the ATP Tour and features both big ranking points and a large prize fund. It is no surprise therefore that the tournament attracts many of the world’s biggest stars and gives fans some fantastic, and highly entertaining, tennis.

ATP Rotterdam

The ATP Rotterdam, also known as the Rotterdam Open or as the World Tennis Tournament, is a sadly often overlooked tournament in Britain as it has a long history, a great reputation and with a solid ranking on the ATP Tour, it I capable of attracting many of the world’s top stars.

The quality of the tournament can be deemed from the players who have gone on to win the title since the first ever hosting of the event way back in 1972.

It was American trailblazer Arthur Ashe who won that first event and after a year gap, the 1974 edition saw the first home favourite pick up the title when Tom Okker won the event.

Okker went on to be runner up the year after and in also finishing runner up in the first edition, it helped established the event as one for locals and world stars to mix and compete.

Amongst the biggest names to win in Rotterdam are Jimmy Connors (1978,1981), Bjorn Borg (1979), Stefan Edberg (1987,1988), Boris Becker (1992), Richard Krajicek (1995,1997), Goran Ivanisevic (1996), Lleyton Hewitt (2004), Roger Federer (2005, 2012, 2018), Britain’s own Andy Murray (2009), Robin Soderling (2011,2011), Juan Martin del Potro (2013), Tomas Berdych (2014), Stan Wawrinka (2015), Jo Wilfried Tsonga (2017) a Gail Monfils (2019,2020).

One of the most notable moments in the history of the event, and in the history of the ATP Tour, came in the final of the 1984 tournament, which saw Czech-American star Ivan Lendl come up against his rival Jimmy Conners. With Lendl 6-0, 1-0 up early in the 2nd set, the match was interested by a bomb scare and it turned out to be a hoax, Ivan Lendl refused to come back out to play on and the match was abandoned with the 1984 edition therefore having no champion.

Alongside the main singles event, the tournament also offers a highly competitive doubles event that features a good mix of the best doubles specialists and a lot of the big names players from the singles event doing double duty.

As well as offering lots of fantastic down the years, the tournament has also undergone many changes since that inaugural event in the early 1970’s.

Between the first edition in 1972 through to the 1977 edition, the tournament took place on the WCT circuit. The World Championship Tennis tour was in many ways the forerunner of the ATP Tour.

Before becoming the ATP Tour however, the tournament moved to the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1978 to 1989.

Upon the formation and joining of the ATP Tour, the Rotterdam Open has always held a decent ranking with it first becoming an ATP Championship Series / International Series Gold level event between 1999-2008.

In 2009, the ATP Rotterdam moved to an ATP Tour 500 ranked event under the new and current structure and from their it has remained at the same ranked.

Despite the lack of time zone issues and the quality of the action on the court mixed with the good setting and the star names on offer, it can still be a difficult and frustrating experience to watch the ATP Rotterdam on British television.
