Matches are played at the Arena Armeec in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia with all of the action taking place on indoor hard courts.

The tournament is a relatively new one on the ATP World Tour having only been re-established in 2016 although there was a defunct tournament that ran from 1980-81.

As an ATP 250 tournament, the Sofia Open features a good mix of top 50 players and those looking to break into the top 50 which helps create some interesting and different match ups whilst still providing highly entertaining and quality tennis. ATP Sofia

The Sofia Open, also known simply as the ATP Sofia, is the biggest tournament to be held in Bulgaria and one of the biggest events to take place in the region, that allows the ATP Sofia to attract many of the top stars from Eastern Europe.

The action in Sofia takes place at the Arena Armeec, also known as the Arena Sofia, which is a relatively large and modern arena that offers a great home for the action.

The Sofia Open has a relatively small prize fund, it is also a relatively newly established event with little history and prestige around it and it has a low ranking on the ATP Tour, where it is a ATP World Tour 250 Series event but despite that it is an event that still manages to draw a number of household names.

The Arena is capable of hosting around 12,000 fans for tennis events but it is perhaps better known as the main multi-sports complex, concert arena and event centre in the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia.

Other sports to take place at the arena include basketball, volleyball, handball, futsal, boxing, weightlifting, fencing and gymnastics but when the AT Tour roles into town, all of the focus is on the ATP Sofia and the star names that appear.

The arena’s construction started in 2009 and the doors opened in 2011 and it was partly that, along with the emergence of Grigor Dimitrov, led to the establishment of the new tournament.

The inaugural event, held in 2016 was won by Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain) who defeated Viktor Troicki (Serbia) but the tournament really came into its own in 2017 when local favourite and star of the sport Grigor Dimitrov defeated David Goffin (Belgium) in an exciting final.

The standard of winners has continued to improve with the likes of Daniil Medvedev (2019) and Jannik Sinner (2020-21) both picking up the title in Bulgaria, but there was a shock winner in 2022 when relative unknown Marc-Andrea Husler or Switzerland defeated Holger Rune of Denmark for his first title.

Just like the vast majority of tennis tournaments that feature on the main ATP Tour, the ATP Sofia features a doubles event that runs alongside the singles event.

The doubles side of the tournament features a good mix of both doubles specialists and singles players who are pulling double duty.

It has been in the doubles event that British players enjoyed their first success at the tournament with the all-British pairing of Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski defeating the pairing of Jurgen Melzer (Austria) and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France) thanks to a walkover.

If you are a fan of tennis, you will more than likely know just how difficult and frustrating it can be to try and find tournaments of stature and ranking of the ATP Sofia on British television.

Even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that showcases tennis, the chances are that the action from Bulgaria will not be featured and even if it is, it will likely only be the biggest matches shown.

The great news for all fans of the sport is that it has never been easier to watch tennis live online including all of the great action from Sofia as you can pick and choose the action that you want to watch via the great live streaming services featured on this page.

No matter if you want to watch the doubles event or the singles event or if you want to mix and match between the 2 you can do just that via the live stream services we feature.

You can also choose to watch the biggest names or the lowest ranked player at the event but if you do choose to watch via one of the great live streaming services offered by the online bookmakers we feature, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch live action not only from Bulgaria but from tennis tournaments held around the globe all year around.

This is actually the 2nd tournament to take place in the city and to have the name of the Sofia Open after the original Sofia Open that took place between 1980-81 as a Grand Prix affiliate tournament where the action took place indoors on a carpet surface.

The winners of the original event were Per Hjertquist of Sweden who defeated Vadim Borisov of the then USSR in 1980 and Richard Meyer of the USA who defeated Leo Palin of Finland in the 1981 final.
