Watch Jannik Sinner Live

Sinner was born on the 16th of August 2001 and grew up in the beautiful municipality of San Candido, which is a mountain resort town in the German-speaking South Tyrol region of Northern Italy.

In a town known more for its ski-ing and snowboarding, it is perhaps not too surprising that the athletic Sinner was also a top junior skier and even won the junior national championship at the age of eight for the giant salmon but what was a huge loss to the ski world has already proven to be a huge gain to the tennis world as Jannik chose to follow a career in the other sport that he excelled at as a youngster.

With the decision made to concentrate on tennis, he left his family and his home town to move to the Italian Riviera and to learn his trade at the impressive Piatti Tennis Centre in Bordighere.

Under the tutelage of Riccardo Piatti and Massimo Sartori made the step up to the ITF Junior circuit but unlike so many stars who make a quick breakthrough on the pro tour, Sinner only had limited success in the junior ranks, played at no Grand Slams and only had a junior career high ranking of 133.

Much of that was down to the lack of tournaments that he played at but his quality did not take long to shine through on the main tour, which he joined in 2018 when he made the step up the ITF Men’s Circuit where he started life playing in Futures level events.

By the end of his first year on that tour, he was already starting to be given wild cards into Challenger level events and his first win at that level came in the Bergamo Challenger held in February 2019 when he was aged just 2017.

That was a huge boost to his world ranking and that helped him enter higher ranked event before making it through to his first ever ATP full tour level event at the Hungarian Open, where he also picked up his first world tour level victory.

His quick rise to the top levels of the sport saw him start to play more regularly on the ATP World Tour before he showed the world his quality by defeating Steve Johnson for his first ever Masters level victory at the Italian Open in 2019.

Later that year, he made his first appearance at a Grand Slam in a losing effort to San Wawrinka before strong performances, such as at the European Open where he made it through to the semi-final stage, saw him qualify for the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals where pulled off a huge shock by defeating Alex de Minaur in the final.

To no ones surprise, he was named the ATP newcomer of the year in 2019 but that certainly did not go to his head as is forward momentum continue din 2000 where he picked up his first ever ATP title at the Sofia Open and he made it through to the quarter finals of the French Open.

2021 proved to be another successful year as he started the season with back to back wins on the ATP Tour and even reached his first ever Masters level event final in a losing effort to Hubert Hurkacz at the Miami Open.

The Italian star is known for his calm demeaner out on the court which has seen a lot of comparisons made between him and Roger Federer. He is known for his strong ground strokes, especially on the back hand where he is capable of creating incredible levels of spin and perhaps thanks to his background of the ski slopes of the Tyrol, he has incredible lateral movement on the court which makes him a great competitor that is strong in attack and defence.
