Eastbourne International
The Eastbourne International is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on both the men’s ATP World Tour and on the women’s WTA World Tour.
On the men’s tour the event is a ATP World Tour 250 Series ranked event and on the women’s side it is a WTA Premier Tournament.
The tournament takes place at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in the seaside town of Eastbourne in England with the event taking place in the build up to the Wimbledon Championship. Matches at the Eastbourne International are played on outdoor Grass Courts.
That helps the event to attract many of the world’s biggest stars and attaches some prestige to an event that has been held since 1974.

WTA Eastbourne
Unlike the majority of tournaments that feature both a women’s and a men’s event, it is the WTA Tour side of the event that has the longest history and the most prestige around it.
The first edition of the women’s event at Eastbourne was held in 1974, when American Chris Evert defeated home favourite Virginia Wade in what was a sign of things to come.
Aside from Wade’s win the following year, 11 of the first 12 running’s of the event where won by players from the USA and 17 of the first 20 events won by those form across the pond include stars such as Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Tracy Austin whilst Lindsay Davenport, Chanda Rubin, Monica Seles Madison Keys have all gone onto pick up the title on the south coast.
Over the past couple of decades or so, it has been European stars who have dominated the event with stars such as Kim Clijsters (Belgium), Justine Henin (Belgium), Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland), Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), Marion Bartoli (France), Belinda Bencic (Switzerland) and Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) all winning at the WTA Eastbourne.
After not been played in 2022, the first time since the late 1970’s that the event didn’t take place, the event has returned with a bang with Jelena Ostapenko winning in 2021 and Petra Kvitova defeating the Latvian star for the 2022 title.
As with the majority of tennis tournaments, the women’s side of the event features both a singles and doubles event, with the doubles side of the draw featuring a good mix of singles stars doing double duty and doubles specialists.

ATP Eastbourne
The men’s event in Eastbourne only started up in 2009 after the tournament moved from Nottingham, where it also moved back to briefly for the 2015-16 tennis seasons.
Despite the relatively low ranking of the event and the lack of prestige about it, the tournament does managed to attract many household names, with many of them going on to win the title.
Amongst those to have gone onto win the event are Michael Llodra (France), Andreas Seppi (Ital), Andy Roddick (the United States of America), Feliciano Lopez (Spain), Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Mischa Zverev (Germany) and Taylor Fritz (the United States of America).
Whilst there has been little for home fans to cheer in the singles event for much of the tournaments existence in East Sussex, the doubles event that runs alongside the singles event has given lots of hope for local stars.
Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski were the first British doubles pairing to make the final when they finished runners up in 2010 but in 2012, there was to be no such close call as the tournament saw the first ever all-British final with Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins defeating Jamie Delgado and Ken Skupski.
Dominic Inglot won the 2014 edition alongside Treat Huey of the Philippines, whilst 2018 once more saw an all-British final with Luke Bambridge and Jonny O’Mara defeating the Skupski brothers.
Taylor Fritz has found the tournament to his likening recently with title wins in 2019 and 2022 with only Alex de Minaur stopping him in 2021.
