The Sydney International is a professional tennis tournament held in the New South Wales city of Sydney in Australia where all of the matches takes place on outdoor hard courts.

The tournament is featured on both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour and it is also one of the most historic tournament sin the world with a history going all of the at back to 1885.

Whilst the city of Sydney is far more known in a sporting sense as the home of Rugby League and it is the NRL that dominates the sporting landscape for 99% of the year, for 1 week all eyes are on the sport of tennis and on the Sydney International.

ATP Sydney

The men’s side of the tournament has a long history going back to 1885 when the tournament was used a way to determine the best players from ‘the colonies’ ahead of forming an Australasian team for the Davis Cup but the event didn’t become a regularly held annual tournament until 1935.

Down the years the event has had a number of changes to its name and ranking on the tour but the event has remains one of the biggest tournaments in Australia and it has remained an attractive proposition for players, leading to strong line ups.

For much of the opening 50 years or so of the tournament, it was local players who dominated things, with British star Wilberforce Eaves (in 1891 and 1902) been the only non-Australian winner between 1885 and 1932, but of course even he was born in the country.

The first non-Australian born player to win was Ellsworth Vines in 1932 who defeated Wilmer Allison in an all American final.

Only a handful of other non-local success was enjoyed until the open era when stars from America started to dominate in the 1960’s.

In 1970, the tournament become a GP Championship Series event and stayed on the Grand Prix Tour until 1989.

Amongst the stars to enjoy success during this era were Tim Wilkinson (in 1978 and 1981), Henri Laconte and John Fitzgerald.

In 1990, the event moved to become an ATP World Series level event and the winner during this era included the likes of Pete Sampras, Patrick McEnroe, and Britain’s own Tim Henman.

1998 saw a change to the tournament once more when it became an ATP International Series level event with winners during this period including Lleyton Hewitt, Roger Federer and James Blake.

The last change to the event came in 2009, when the tournament became an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event and since then the likes of David Nalbandian, Marcos Baghdatis, Gilles Simon, Bernard Tomic, Juan Martin del Potro, Gilles Muller, Daniil Medvedev, and home favourite Alex de Minaur, have gone not enjoy success.

In the 2022 men’s edition of the tournament, the final featured the relatively unknown Aslan Karatsev take on the former world number 1 Andy Murray who was still making his comeback from long term injury and despite the disparity in experience, it was the young Russian who ran away to a comfortable victory in straight sets.

The ATP Sydney tournament also features a double event alongside the singles event that feature a mix of both doubles specialists and singles stars who are doing double duty to make for an exciting event that can also be watch live.

WTA International

The women’s side of the tournament is known as the WTA Sydney and it too has a long history also going back to 1885 and it too was an event dominated by local players for much of its early history and it was also an American that broke the run of home wins when Doris Dart won the 1948 title.

It took until the 1980’s when a truly international flair to the event happened and since then stars from across the globe have not just featured at the event but have gone on to enjoy success.

The women’s event has also undergone a number of changing to its name and ranking with it been a WTA Tier III level event between 1990-1992 when Natasha Zvereva (of Belarus), Jana Novotna (of the Czech Republic) and Gabriela Sabatini (of Argentina) won the titles.

In 1993 it became a WTA Tier II level event and winners during this period of the event included Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo, Kim Clijsters, and Justine Henin.

The next change came in 2009, when the tournament became a WTA Premier level event and that sees the tournament have a large prize fund and the ability to attract top stars.

Winners during this era of the event include Elena Dementieva, Li Na, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, and Britain’s own Johanna Konta.

The women’s side of the draw also features a doubles event and that also offers action between doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty that can be watch live.

If you are a fan of tennis you will more than likely know that it can be difficult to watch tournaments such as the Sydney International on British television as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv channel that features tennis coverage, there will only be a select number of matches chosen to be shown.

That can often lead to the frustrating experience of fans missing out on watching the matches that was of the most interest to them or missing out on watching their favourite player.

Thankfully, there is now a much better way, in our opinion, to watch live tennis and that is via the great services featured on this page.

No matter if you are wanting to watch the live action from the women’s event or the men’s event or if you want to watch the singles action or the doubles action, you can do via the great live streaming services found on this page.

If you do decide to watch the action via the online bookmakers that we feature, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch great action not just from this event but form tournaments held across the globe, all season long on both the women’s WTA Tour and the men’s ATP Tour.
