Watch Dan Evans Live
Daniel Evans first got into the sport after playing squad for fun with his family at a young age and it is likely that that early introduction to holding and using a rackets helped his early advancement in the junior levels where he quickly started to show good promise.
By the age of 13, the Birmingham native had moved to Loughborough and to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association’s) academy to hone his skill including been part of the 2004 British team that world the World Junior Tennis competition held in the Czech Republic.
Throughout his career, the Brits temperament, dedication to the sport, behaviour, and personal views have continually held back his career and that was something that started from an early age as after showing his huge potential by winning his first junior title at the Marcq-en-Baroeul in 2006, he was removed from the junior Wimbledon tournament due to behavioural issues.
In 2007, he was given another chance to get into the good books of the LTA as he was called into the Davis Cup squad as a hitting partners for Tim Henman and Jamie Murray and in June that year, he picked up his first win on the ATP Tour in a first round qualifier for the Nottingham Open.
He continued to play on the futures tour and in 2007, he also picked up his first wins at that level.
He continued to play in the junior events at the majors where he enjoyed limited success at the 2007 US Open and reached the quarter-finals at the 2008 Aus Open but 2 quarter finals was the best he would go onto achieve at the Grand Slam junior level.
In 2008, Evans made the step up to the senior ranks on a full time level as his off of the court behaviour once again led to him losing a qualification into Wimbledon and led to all funding been cut.
2009 saw another year of redemption for him as he was called up to play-offs for the Davis Cup team and he also won his at the Caversham International Challenger event.
That helped him to gain a wildcard for Wimbledon, where he lost in the first round.
Towards the end of 2009, he made his debut in the Davis Cup proper but lost his matches.
2010 saw him reached the first round proper of his first ATP Tour at the Heineken Open but by the end of the year was once again at odds with the LTA.
For the next few years, he continued mix between smaller ATP level event and Challenger events before dedicating himself to the sport once again in 2014 when he enjoyed one of his most successful years on tour to date but off the court issues hit again, including his then coach quitting and complaining of the Brits lack of commitment to tennis, so it was no surprise to see him no show a tournament the next year and then leaving the tour altogether.
2015 did end on a high note however as he was part of the successful British Davis Cup team where he was a hitting partner and that seem to reignite his interest in the sport once again.
2016 saw his potential start to come through and by 2017 he had broken into the top 50 of the world rankings and was now a mainstay of the ATP Tour, including one of his best showing at a Grand Slam at the 2017 Aus Open when he defeated Marin Cilic and Bernard Tomic on a run to the 4th round.
Unfortunately, his off the field issues hit again and Evans received a 1 year recreational drugs ban, so 2018 was all about rebuilding his fitness.
Thankfully for fans of tennis, for fans of Evans and of course for Daniel himself, that ban seems to have been a big awakening for him and whilst he has still made some comments online and in the media that have not exactly shown him in a positive light, his on the court performances have been his best ever.
By the 2020 season he was the British number 1 and by 2021 he had gone on to win his first ever ATP Tour title at the Murray River Open in Melbourne. In April, the same year he reached the final of the Miami Open, a Masters level event.
Dan Evans is known for his strong defence and been a tactical player out on the court so whilst that often does not lead to many winners or ‘exciting’ matches, when on form he is a danger for any opponent.
