The Billie Jean Cup has a long history that goes back to before the open era of tennis changed things for ever but the idea behind the tournament goes back even farther.
In 1919, Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman had an idea to start a team tennis competition for women but it did not go much past been simply an idea until 1923, when she presented a trophy, called down the Wightman Cup, to the winner of the annual match up between the United States and Great Britain.
It took until 1962, when Nell Hopman, the wife of the Australian Davis Cup Captain Harry Hopman, built on that idea and launched a proposal to the ITF who turned that proposals into reality with the formation of the new Federation Cup.
Over the decades of the Federation Cup, the Fed Cup and the now Billie Jean Cup, a number of countries have remained at the top of the sport with the United States dominating much of the 1980’s and 1990’s whilst the Czech Republic dominated things in the 2010’s.
In the early years of the tournament, Australia enjoyed lots of success but to the betterment of the event, the winning nation has been spread out quite evenly across the majority of top tennis playing nations, with nearly 20 nations either winning the event or finishing runner up.
The inaugural event, held in 1963 saw the United States of American winning the first Federation Cup title after defeating Australia in the final of an event held at Queens Club in London.
