WTA Bogota

The Copa Colsanitas, also known simply as the WTA Bogota, is a professional tennis tournament that place on the women’s WTA Tour.

The event is hosted by the city of Bogota in Colombia, where it has been one of the most established tennis tournaments in South America.

All of the matches in Colombia are played on outdoor clay courts at the intimate Carmel Club.

The tournament is a relatively low ranked one as it is a WTA International level event and with that comes a relatively low overall prize fund and winner’s purse.

With that in mind and the difficulties for players playing somewhere like Bogota and it will come as no surprise that the tournament often struggles to attract the biggest stars of the sport but what it does offer is a tournament full of matches between clay court specialists and that often leads to exciting action that is well worth watching for any tennis fan but especially for fans of clay court tournaments.

The tournament has a long history going back to the late 1990’s with the inaugural event held in 1998 when Paula Suarez of Argentina defeated Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada to pick up the first ever title at the WTA Bogota.

With the event held at altitude and not attracting many stars from outside of the region, it was no surprise to see South American players dominate the early years of the tournament with Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia winning the 1999 event and then the 2002, 2003 and 2004 editions.

Paola Suarez became the first player to win the event on more than 1 occasion when she won the 2001 edition which came a year after the first win for a European player when Patricia Wartush won the 2000 edition against Tathiana Garbin in the first final to go to 3 sets.

After the event became more established, it was European stars who started to dominate things with winners from Spain, Italy, France and Serbia over the next decade or so with Jelena Jankovic (in 2013) and Caroline Garcia (in 2014) becoming the biggest names to win in Bogota.

Since then, the tournament has seen winners from across the world pick up the title including Teliana Pereira (Brazil), Francesca Schiavone (Italy) and Amanda Anisimova (of the USA).

In 2021, Camila Osorio of Colombia won the title before Tatjana Maria of Germany won up in 2022.

As with the majority of professional tennis tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour, the WTA Copa Colsanitas in Bogota also features a doubles event alongside the singles draw.
The doubles event features a good mix of both doubles specialists and singles players who are doing double duty.

Interestingly, it was the singles championship who also won the inaugural doubles event at the tournament when Paola Suarez teamed up with Janette Husarova of Slovakia to defeat Melissa Mazzotta (Colombia) and Ekaterina Sysoeva of Russia to win the first double title Bogota.
