WTA Bogota
The Copa Colsanitas, also known simply as the WTA Bogota, is a professional tennis tournament that place on the women’s WTA Tour.
The event is hosted by the city of Bogota in Colombia, where it has been one of the most established tennis tournaments in South America.
All of the matches in Colombia are played on outdoor clay courts at the intimate Carmel Club.
The tournament is a relatively low ranked one as it is a WTA International level event and with that comes a relatively low overall prize fund and winner’s purse.
With that in mind and the difficulties for players playing somewhere like Bogota and it will come as no surprise that the tournament often struggles to attract the biggest stars of the sport but what it does offer is a tournament full of matches between clay court specialists and that often leads to exciting action that is well worth watching for any tennis fan but especially for fans of clay court tournaments.
The tournament has a long history going back to the late 1990’s with the inaugural event held in 1998 when Paula Suarez of Argentina defeated Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada to pick up the first ever title at the WTA Bogota.
With the event held at altitude and not attracting many stars from outside of the region, it was no surprise to see South American players dominate the early years of the tournament with Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia winning the 1999 event and then the 2002, 2003 and 2004 editions.
Paola Suarez became the first player to win the event on more than 1 occasion when she won the 2001 edition which came a year after the first win for a European player when Patricia Wartush won the 2000 edition against Tathiana Garbin in the first final to go to 3 sets.
After the event became more established, it was European stars who started to dominate things with winners from Spain, Italy, France and Serbia over the next decade or so with Jelena Jankovic (in 2013) and Caroline Garcia (in 2014) becoming the biggest names to win in Bogota.
Since then, the tournament has seen winners from across the world pick up the title including Teliana Pereira (Brazil), Francesca Schiavone (Italy) and Amanda Anisimova (of the USA).
In 2021, Camila Osorio of Colombia won the title before Tatjana Maria of Germany won up in 2022.
Stream Copa Colsanitas Live
As with the majority of professional tennis tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour, the WTA Copa Colsanitas in Bogota also features a doubles event alongside the singles draw.
The doubles event features a good mix of both doubles specialists and singles players who are doing double duty.
Interestingly, it was the singles championship who also won the inaugural doubles event at the tournament when Paola Suarez teamed up with Janette Husarova of Slovakia to defeat Melissa Mazzotta (Colombia) and Ekaterina Sysoeva of Russia to win the first double title Bogota.
No matter if you are wanting to watch the singles event from Bogota or the doubles side of the draw, you can do via the live streaming services featured on this page.
If you are a fan of tennis you will likely know that it can be tournament such as this one that featured specialists players that give some of the most competitive and often the most exciting tennis outside of the Grand Slams but it is also these smaller events held at smaller venues in completely different time zone that can be the hardest for fans to watch.
Even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that bring you live tennis coverage, the likelihood is that only a select number of matches at best will be chosen for coverage from events such as the WTA Bogota.
That means fans often have to miss out on watching the match that they want to watch or the player that they are most interested in but thankfully there is now a way that you can choose the action that you want to watch no matter if it is the tournament opener or the final.
All of the incredible live streaming services that we feature on this page bring you live tennis and whilst you do need to be aged 18 or over to watch live via the online bookies that we feature; you can then watch tennis not just from the Copa Colsanitas but from tennis tournaments held across the globe all year long.

History
History of the WTA Copa Colsanitas
1998: The beginning of a major Colombian tennis tradition
The Copa Colsanitas began in 1998 in Bogotá, Colombia, establishing a permanent platform for women’s professional tennis in the country. Its arrival was significant because it gave Colombian audiences access to an international WTA competition on home soil and offered professional players another opportunity to compete for ranking points in South America.
The tournament developed within the WTA Tour structure, bringing together players from different countries and providing a competitive setting for established professionals and rising talents. Its clay-court format became a defining characteristic, connecting the event to the wider tradition of clay-court tennis while giving it a distinctive identity through Bogotá’s altitude.
Colombia had already produced internationally recognised tennis players, but hosting a regular women’s professional event created another way to strengthen the sport’s domestic profile. A tournament of this kind can support tennis development by exposing young players to the professional game, creating opportunities for local competitors and attracting attention to the host country’s tennis community.
The tournament’s place in South American tennis
Over the years, Copa Colsanitas became an established fixture on the women’s professional circuit in South America. The region’s tournaments are important because they give players opportunities to compete internationally without always travelling to Europe, North America or Asia. For athletes managing demanding schedules and limited resources, regional events can play an important role in building experience and improving rankings.
The Bogotá tournament also helped connect Colombian tennis fans with the international women’s game. Supporters could watch players from different tennis cultures compete in familiar surroundings, while local athletes gained opportunities to test their skills against opponents with a wide range of playing styles.
The event’s continuity is part of its significance. Professional tennis tournaments require sustained organisation, sponsorship, facilities and interest from players and spectators. Maintaining a place on the calendar over many years demonstrates the importance of a dependable event to the regional sporting landscape, even as the wider professional circuit changes.
2000s: Establishing an identity on the clay courts
During the 2000s, Copa Colsanitas continued to build its reputation as a clay-court tournament in a geographically distinctive location. Bogotá’s elevation made the conditions an important part of the event’s identity. Unlike tournaments played at sea level, where air resistance is greater, high-altitude conditions can produce a faster flight through the air. Players therefore need to adapt their serve, their groundstrokes and their ability to control the ball’s depth.
Clay adds its own tactical demands. Players often have to construct points through several shots, use spin and angles, and recover quickly after moving laterally. However, the effect of altitude means that familiar clay-court patterns may need to be adjusted. Aggressive players can find opportunities to finish points earlier, while defensive players must work hard to keep their shots inside the lines.
This combination helps explain why the tournament is interesting from a technical perspective. It is not simply another stop on the tour; it is an event where environmental conditions can influence tactical decisions and match outcomes. Coaches and players must consider the local circumstances rather than assuming that success elsewhere will translate automatically to Bogotá.
Fabiola Zuluaga and the Colombian breakthrough
Colombian tennis history is closely associated with Fabiola Zuluaga, one of the country’s most successful women’s players. Born in Cúcuta in 1979, Zuluaga reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 16 in 2004 and became a leading figure in Colombian tennis during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Her achievements included reaching the Australian Open semi-finals in 2004, making her the first Colombian woman to reach the singles semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. Zuluaga’s career helped demonstrate that Colombian players could compete at the highest level of the international game. Her success also provided an important source of inspiration for the country’s next generation.
Although her broader career should be distinguished from the tournament’s own history, her achievements form an important part of the context in which women’s tennis in Colombia developed. Copa Colsanitas provided a home setting in which local players and fans could engage with the same professional environment that produced international stars.
2000 and 2001: Paola Suárez’s consecutive titles
Argentina’s Paola Suárez won the Copa Colsanitas singles title in both 2000 and 2001, becoming one of the event’s early repeat champions. Suárez was a highly accomplished clay-court player who would later reach a career-high singles ranking of world No. 9 in 2004. She was also particularly successful in doubles, winning eight Grand Slam women’s doubles titles with Spain’s Virginia Ruano Pascual.
Her back-to-back victories in Bogotá helped establish an early pattern of strong South American performances at the event. Suárez’s success was particularly appropriate for a tournament played on clay, a surface on which movement, point construction and consistency are often crucial. Her career illustrated how a player could build success across singles and doubles while competing against the world’s leading professionals.
2000s and early 2010s: International champions and growing recognition
As the tournament matured, its champions reflected the international breadth of the WTA Tour. Players from different countries won the singles title, and the event continued to provide opportunities for competitors at different stages of their careers. That mixture is a defining feature of professional tennis: established players arrive hoping to add another trophy, while lower-ranked opponents are determined to make the most of a valuable opportunity.
The tournament also developed through changes in sponsorship and presentation. The Colsanitas name remained central to its identity, while sponsorship arrangements helped sustain the event and its place on the international calendar. Sponsorship is a practical part of professional sport, supporting the facilities, staffing and organisation needed to stage an international tournament.
As women’s tennis gained further international visibility, events such as Copa Colsanitas contributed to the sport’s presence beyond the biggest tournaments. They allowed fans to follow professional players throughout the season and gave emerging competitors meaningful opportunities to progress.
Camila Osorio: A new generation takes centre stage
One of the most important modern chapters in the tournament’s history involves Colombian player Camila Osorio. Born in Cúcuta in 2001, Osorio emerged as one of the country’s leading young tennis talents after winning the girls’ singles title at the 2019 US Open. She subsequently made her mark on the senior circuit and became a major figure for Colombian supporters.
Osorio won the Copa Colsanitas singles title in 2021, defeating Slovenia’s Tamara Zidanšek in the final. The victory was particularly meaningful because it made Osorio a Colombian champion at a tournament closely associated with the country’s tennis identity. Her win offered home fans a memorable example of a young local player converting promise into success on the professional stage.
Osorio successfully defended her title in 2022, defeating Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final. Winning consecutive editions demonstrated her ability to handle the demands of the event and the expectations that come with competing as a home favourite. Her achievements also connected a new generation of Colombian tennis with the tournament’s long-standing history.
2023: Tatjana Maria wins in Bogotá
Germany’s Tatjana Maria won the Copa Colsanitas singles title in 2023, defeating Peyton Stearns of the United States in the final. Maria was already known for her longevity on the professional circuit and for a distinctive playing style that includes frequent use of slice and variation. Her victory demonstrated that experience and tactical creativity can be particularly valuable in the demanding conditions of Bogotá.
The result also reinforced the international character of the tournament. Although Colombian players naturally attract strong local support, Copa Colsanitas remains a global competition in which the title must be earned against opponents from across the tour. An international winner adds another perspective to the event’s history and illustrates the variety of playing styles that can succeed on its courts.
2024: Marie Bouzková claims the title
Czech player Marie Bouzková won the 2024 Copa Colsanitas singles title, defeating Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio in the final. The match brought together an established international competitor and a local favourite who had already won the tournament twice. Bouzková’s victory added another chapter to the event’s varied championship history, while Osorio’s run underlined her continuing importance to Colombian tennis.
The final also illustrated a recurring theme of the tournament: home support can create an exciting atmosphere, but the title remains a test of technical skill, tactical discipline and composure. Players must cope with the conditions, manage pressure and execute their game plans when the stakes are highest.
2025 and beyond: Continuing the tournament’s legacy
The Copa Colsanitas continues to represent an important opportunity for women’s professional tennis in Colombia. Its long-running presence in Bogotá connects the country’s tennis heritage with a changing generation of players, while its place on the WTA Tour gives local fans access to international competition.
As the professional game evolves, the tournament’s lasting value lies in more than the name engraved on the trophy. It creates competitive opportunities, helps maintain the visibility of women’s tennis in South America and gives emerging players a stage on which to test themselves. Future editions will add new champions, rivalries and memorable matches to a history that began in 1998.
For fans, that is the enduring appeal of the WTA Copa Colsanitas. Its story combines Colombian sporting identity, international champions and the unusual challenge of clay-court tennis at altitude. It is a tournament with a distinctive personality, a meaningful place in the regional tennis calendar and plenty of potential for more chapters worth watching.
Conclusion: Why the WTA Copa Colsanitas Matters

Since 1998, it has provided a stage for players from Colombia and around the world, while helping connect local supporters with the wider WTA Tour. Its history includes the achievements of Paola Suárez, the back-to-back triumphs of Camila Osorio and championship performances by international stars such as Tatjana Maria and Marie Bouzková.
