Grass Court Championships Tennis
The Grass Court Championships Berlin, also known as the German Open, is one of the oldest tournaments in the world for women tennis players but it has had an on/off history for much of the last couple of decades.
The great news is that the near future of the tournament looks much stronger than its recent past and even better is the fact that tennis fans can now watch all of the action live online via our WTA tennis live stream partners.
The tournament was first established way back in 1896, where it was played in the German city of Hamburg until 1978, alongside the men’s event. The event moved to what was then West Berlin in West Germany, where it was played from 1979-1990 and then in the unified city of Berlin between 1991-2008.
It was then but on the back burner and not played for over a decade before coming back to life in 2020 when the tournament was played at the Am Rothenbaum Rot-Weiss Tennis Club in the German capital of Berlin. The tournament is now played on the women’s WTA Tour where it is a Premier level event.
Up until 2008, matches were played on outdoor clay courts but the re-booted edition of the tournament sees action taking place on outdoor grass courts and the tournament now acts as a warm up event for the Wimbledon Championships and that, along with a large prize fund, allows for the tournament to attract many big names and to give us all some great grass court tennis action.

WTA Berlin
The German Open, as the tournament was known for much of its history is a professional tennis tournament that is held in the German capital city of Berlin.
Although the tournament is one of the most historic tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour it is an event that has undergone a number of changes including to the surface the action takes place on, the host venue and city and even the name of the event.
In 1989, the tournament took on a sponsored name of the Lufthansa Cup in 1989, before becoming the Lufthansa Cup German Open in 1991.
After going back to simply the German Open, the event became known as the Eurocard German Open in 2001 and then the Mastercard German Open in 2003.
In 2004, it changed name to the Ladies German Open before taking on a number of sponsors in the years since.
The tournament began life in the city of Hamburg where the action took place on outdoor clay court.
The first decade of the event was dominated by British stars, with 9 of the first 10 events won by British stars but it was perhaps fitting that the inaugural tournament was won by a local player with Maren Thomson picking up the first ever German Open title.
After the British dominance finished, it was German players who dominated things, with the majority of win between 1906 to 1939 either coming from Germany or Austria.
In the post war era, the tournament started to attract more stars from across the world and that started to show in the winners, with early winners including Dorothy Head (the first winner from the USA in 1950), Nancye Head (the first winner from Australia) and Sandra Reynolds (the first winner from South Africa).
As with the majority of tournaments, the open era which started in the 1960’s saw more players from more places enjoy success at the tournament and this includes a whole host of now household names to win in Hamburg including the likes of Margaret Smith Court (Australia), Billie Jean King (USA) and Sue Barker (Britain).
In 1979, the tournament made the move to its new base in Berlin where Caroline Stoll of the USA won the inaugural Berlin German Open.
The new location has also seen lots of star names to win the event including the likes of Chris Evert-Lloyd (USA), Steffi Graf (who won the tournament on 4 straight occasions twice), Monica Seles (Yugoslavia / USA), Martini Hingis (Switzerland), Amelie Mauresmo (France), Justine Henin (Belgium), Ana Ivanovic (Serbia) and Dinara Safina (Russia).
Unfortunately, the event took a break from the tour between 2009-2019 and then didn’t make its actual return to action until 2021, when the event returned to the tour as a grass court tournament in the build up to the Wimbledon Championships- the only Grand Slam to take place on grass.
As with the majority of event son the WTA Tour, the WTA Berlin also features a doubles event alongside the singles event and the great news is that you can also watch all of the great doubles action live online via the live stream services featured on this page.
The doubles event features a great mix of doubles specialists and singles players who are playing on both sides of the draw.
No matter if you are wanting to watch the singles event from the German Open or the singles, if you are wanting to watch the biggest star or the rank outsider or if you are wanting to watch the tournament opener or the final, you can do.
If you are a fan of tennis you will likely have found it a struggle to watch action from events such as this one on tv as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that features tennis, only a select number of matches will be chosen.
Make sure that you do not miss out on your favourite player or on the match that you want to watch by watching via the German Open live stream services we feature.
If you do decide to watch via the streaming services of the online bookmakers we feature, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then watch live tennis not just from this event but from tournaments held across the globe all season long.
