Primeira Liga
The Primeira Liga, which translates in English to Premier League, act as the main qualification process for European competitions in Portugal with the top ranked teams qualifying for the Champions League and the Europe League and of course the team that finish top of the table come the end of the season are crowned the champions of Portugal.
The league also has relegation to the Liga Pro, the 2nd division of Portuguese football.
That creates a fluid competition with a freshness about it and one that is continuing to grow in quality as can be seen by the more competitive nature of the competition and also by the results of the Primeira Liga clubs in European competitions.
For far too long it was all about the Big 3 but now many teams are showing on the continental stage that they have the quality to compete.
The topflight of football in Portugal was first established way back in 1934 as the Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisao before quickly changing name to Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisao in 1938.
The league once was rebranded but not until 1999 when it became known as the much easier to remember and brand Primeira Liga name it has until today.
As with the majority of topflight football competitions around the globe it has been teams from bug cities that have dominated the Primeira Liga. Due to the larger population centres allowing clubs to grow their attendances and the more sponsors found locally, that is not too surprising but what has separated Portuguese football is that the league has been dominated by just 3 teams.
Aside from just 2 season (Belenenses in 1945-46 and Boavista in 2000-01), each and every titles as gone to either the Lisbon based giants of Sporting Club de Lisboa and Benfica or to the Oporto based Porto.
Nowadays the league is dominated by teams from the north of the country or those based in Lisbon but also by teams from Portuguese islands including Madeira and the Azores.
Due to the lack of finances that many of the clubs have when compared to bigger clubs from bigger leagues, the teams in the Primeira Liga have had to find other ways to compete.
The majority of the clubs spend heavily on their youth teams and give chances to local players to play first team football and to improve. That has led to a strong national team for some time now and to the unearthing of such talent as Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 2nd way teams compete is to take advantage of the countries links to Brazil and the common language they share to scout and develop players from what is thought of by many as the leading country in the world for producing football talent.
The big 3 in Portugal have huge attendances, massive modern stadiums and huge fanbases so it is no surprise that they have been able to sign a number of bug stars down the years and when you couple that with the players produced by all team in the Portuguese topflight and you have a who’s who of Portuguese and South American stars who have played in the competitions.
Star names to have played in the league include Eusebio, Antonio Oliveira, Paulo Future, Rui Barros, Vitor Baia, Joao Pinto, Luis Figo, Petit, Mario Jardel, Ricardo Carvalho, Deco, Ricardo Quaresma, Cristiano Ronaldo, Simao, Javier Saviola, Iker Casillas, Joao Moutinho, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, Joao Felix, Eder Militao, James Rodriguez, Eliaquim Mangala, Ederson, Joao Mario, Hulk, Axel Witsel, Falcao, Andre Silva, Jackson Martinez, Nelson Semeda, Renato Sanches, Angel Di Maria, Danilo, Anderson, Fabio Contrao, Nani, Nico Gaitan, Mermanja Matic, David LuizBruno AlvesJavi Garcia,Marcos Rojo, Rui Patricio, Jan Oblak, Maniche,Bernardo Silva, Helda Costa, Nicolas Otamendi and Pepe.

Format
The format of the league has remained stable since the 2014-15 season and now features 18 clubs who play each other home and away in a round robin basis where the club with the most points come the end of the season, finish top of the table and are declared the champions of Portugal.
The teams that finish in the bottom 2 places are relegated to the Segunda Liga, with the top 2 teams from the second tier promoted to the top flight.
History
Up until the 1938 season, football in Portugal was mostly competed on a regional basis and for much of the early years of the sport in the country, it was the winners of the Portuguese Cup that were thought of as the Champions of Portugal as that featured clubs from all of the regional divisions.
From the 1938 season, a new national league was implemented with the name Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisao (the National Championship of the First Division), which was often shorted to simply the Primeira Divisao (First Division).
It was the giants of FC Porto who won the inaugural competition and it was also them to defend that title a year later during the era when the national championship featured the winners of all of the regional league who met to decide the national champions in a play-off style format.
Originally it was just the top teams from Porto, Coimbra, Lisboa (Lisbon) and Setubal who participated for the national title but by the 1941-42 season, the winners of the Braga and Algarve regional leagues where added.
That lasted until the 1945-46 season when a more traditional pyramid system was implemented and originally there were 3 tiers of the pyramid, the Primeira Divisao, the Segunda Divisao and the Terceira Divisao.
The next big change to the league structure came in 1999, when the 2 top tiers of the sport were took over by the Portuguese League for Professional Football and the top tier was renamed the Primeira Liga (the Premier League).
That change brought about a new level of professionalism to the sport in Portugal and that has led to the top tier having a number of sponsored names including the SuperLiga GalpEnergia (2002-05), Liga betandwin.com (2005-06), bwin Liga (2006-08), Liga Sagres (2008-10), Liga Zon Sagres (2010-14), Liga NOS (2014-21) and the Liga Portugal Bwin (2021-).
