Watch European Masters

The European Masters is a professional ranking Snooker tournament that has a long and nomadic history dating back to the end of the 1980’s.

Down the years the tournament has had to endure been replaced on the tour, changing name, changing location and dropping to a non-ranking event but over the past few seasons the tournament has been resurrected and it is a now a ranking event that attracts many of the sport’s biggest names.

Back in 1989, there were no ranking events held outside of the UK but after some interest was shown after successful invitational matches on the continent, the European Open was inaugurated.

Originally hosted in the city of Deauville in France, the nomadic nature of the tournament started from the off as the 2nd edition of the event moved to Lyon, also in France.

The following season the tournament upped sticks once more with a move to Rotterdam in The Netherlands, before spending 4 seasons in Belgium, firstly in Tongeren before moving to Antwerp.

In 1996, the event moved to the capital of Malta, Valletta, for 2 years before changing name to the Irish Open as the event moves to Tallaght in the Republic of Ireland.

That change of name and location didn’t work too well which led to a hiatus until 2001 when the event moved back to Valletta and re-took the European Open title. It was a short lived stay in Malta however as the event moved to Torquay a year later before going back to Malta to the lesser known Portomaso.

After 1 year the event changed name to the Malta Cup but stayed in the same location until the final Malta Cup in 2008- for that final tournament the event became a non-ranking event.

That 2008 edition was also the last version of the event until 2016, when the tournament came back as the European Masters, with the return taking place in Bucharest. The city of Lommel in Belgium was next to host before a move to Dornbirn in Austria.

Despite that hectic existence, the tournament still attracts many of the sports biggest names and gives fans great action.

European Masters Snooker

Whilst the sport has enjoy continue success and interest on the British Isles for as long as any other professional sport and it has enjoyed growing success in far flung places such as Australia and China, the sport as often failed to make inroads in the European market.

That is not just a big shame for fans but also for this tournament as it has tried to act as a promotion vehicle for Snooker across the continent since its inaugural event held in Australia in 1989.

Ever since then, the tournament has moved around the continent, change name on a frustratingly regular occurrence and has even left the tour completely for a long spell.

Despite all of that, the tournament has obviously left a small mark on the continent with a growing number of players from Europe now joining the pro ranks of the world Snooker tour.

The most unfortunate thing for fans of the sport based in the UK is that despite the history of the event, it has failed to grow prestige around it and that can often lead to it been difficult to watch on British television.

That is despite the quality of participants the tournament has attracted down the years which can be seen by the players who have gone in to pick up the tile including such famous names as John Parrott, Jimmy White, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ken Doherty, Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump, Neil Robertson, and Mark Selby.

Another method of telling the quality of a tournament is to look at the players who came runner up and failed to win titles at the tournament with that hinting at the strength in depth of the line up with this list of players including the likes of Terry Griffith, Peter Ebdon, Alan McManus, Joe Perry, Graeme Dott, Ryan Day, Ken Doherty and Stuart Bingham.
