Watch Kyren Wilson Live

Kyren Wilson was born on the 23rd of December 1991 and raised in the Northamptonshire town of Kettering, which has become a region known for Snooker players.

Whilst so many of his contemporary’s had a relatively straightforward run to the professional ranks, things for Wilson where not quite so plain sailing.

Things did start off well as the young Wilson enjoyed success in the International Open Series, including winning one round and with a 5th place in the rankings, he won the right to participate on the main World Snooker Tour.

On the biggest qualifying stages, including the UK Championship and the World Championship he did enjoy limited success but things were a struggle over all and with his world ranking leaving him with without a place on the tour for the next year, Wilson found himself in Q School and unable to win back his place at the top table.

That led to Kyren Wilson losing his professional status and as an amateur once more, he was unable to qualify for rankings events.

That found him having to play on the Players Tour Championship (PTC) level of event and once more he failed to enjoy much success and found himself having to go through the qualifying school for the main tour and once more he came up short.

It took until the 2013 season for him to re-find his feet and to turn professional once more but this time he took the opportunity with both hands and in picking up an early win against Stuart Bingham at the Shanghai Masters, he showed that he was a player to look out for.

That seemed to be a great confidence boost for Wilson and seemed to show him that he belonged on the biggest stage of all and that came into to fruition as he ended his first season as a pro by qualifying for the World Championship- although he did lose in the first round to Ricky Walden.

The next season was another year of struggle but in the 2015/16 season, he went on to pick up his first ranking title, at the Shanghai Masters and from on in he has never looked back and has now not only become a well-established player on the tour but one who is always battling it out for titles and finals no matter what the standing of an event is.

History

History of Kyren Wilson Snooker

Kyren Wilson was born on 23 December 1991 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. His route into professional snooker began early, and he entered the professional ranks for the first time in 2010. That initial spell on tour lasted only one season, and he subsequently had to work his way back towards the top level. Rather than marking the end of his ambitions, the setback became an important part of his development. Wilson regained his professional tour card in 2013 and began building the results that would establish him as a serious contender on the World Snooker Tour.

His progress became more noticeable in 2013, when he reached the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters. The result showed that Wilson could compete with established professionals, although a breakthrough ranking title was still to come. In 2014, he made his debut at the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, losing to Ricky Walden. The experience introduced him to one of snooker’s most demanding stages. The Crucible is not simply another tournament venue: its long matches, intense atmosphere and history of famous champions make it a place where composure can matter as much as technique.

Wilson’s first major breakthrough arrived in September 2015 at the Shanghai Masters. Ranked outside the world’s top 50 at the time, he defeated Judd Trump 10–9 in a dramatic final to win his first ranking title. The victory was significant for two reasons. First, it gave Wilson a major professional trophy and confirmed that he could beat an elite opponent when the stakes were highest. Second, it demonstrated the value of persistence: the player who had previously lost his tour place was now winning one of the sport’s important events. His Shanghai triumph became the foundation for the next stage of his career.

Wilson continued to build his reputation over the following seasons. In 2018, he reached the final of the Masters, one of snooker’s three prestigious Triple Crown tournaments alongside the World Championship and UK Championship. He lost to Mark Allen, but reaching the final confirmed his status as a leading player. That year he also won the Paul Hunter Classic, adding another title to his growing collection. In 2019, he claimed the German Masters, defeating David Gilbert 9–7 in the final. The German Masters win strengthened his reputation as a player capable of delivering in high-pressure ranking events away from the UK’s traditional snooker venues.

Wilson added further success in 2020, winning the Championship League and reaching the World Championship final. His route to the Crucible final included a dramatic 17–16 semi-final victory over Anthony McGill. That contest was a tense, high-quality encounter which underlined Wilson’s determination and ability to survive under severe pressure. In the final, however, he faced Ronnie O’Sullivan, who won 18–8 to secure his sixth world title. Wilson had reached the sport’s biggest match but finished as runner-up. It was a painful result, although reaching a world final was another major milestone in his development.

The 2021 World Championship offered another opportunity for Wilson to reach the final. In the semi-final against Shaun Murphy, Wilson established a 10–4 lead but could not hold it. Murphy recovered to win 17–12 and progress to the final. The defeat was a reminder that commanding leads are not guarantees in long-format snooker. A player may be in control for hours, yet a change in momentum can transform a match. Wilson’s subsequent World Championship campaigns in 2022 and 2023 ended at the last-16 stage, including a heavy 13–2 defeat by John Higgins in 2023. His eventual title-winning run would therefore follow several seasons of close calls and difficult lessons.

The defining chapter of Kyren Wilson’s snooker history came in 2024. Entering the World Championship as the 12th seed, he began his campaign against Dominic Dale, then defeated Joe O’Connor and four-time world champion John Higgins to reach the semi-finals. There, Wilson beat David Gilbert 17–11 to book his second Crucible final. His opponent, Jak Jones, had enjoyed an impressive run through the draw, setting up a final between two players seeking their first world title.

Wilson started the final strongly, winning the first seven frames and putting Jones under immediate pressure. Jones fought back during the match, but Wilson retained enough of his advantage to win 18–14. The result made Wilson the 23rd player to become world champion at the Crucible and fulfilled the ambition he had expressed when he first appeared at the venue a decade earlier. His performance included four century breaks and eight additional breaks of more than 50. The title was not merely another trophy: it established Wilson as one of the select group of players who have won snooker’s most prestigious championship.

The success continued into the 2024–25 season. Wilson won the Xi’an Grand Prix, Northern Ireland Open, German Masters and Players Championship, adding four ranking titles in a highly productive campaign. These victories showed that the World Championship was not an isolated high point. He could also win other tournaments against strong fields and manage the demands of a busy professional schedule. His German Masters victory was particularly notable because it added another title at a tournament he had previously won in 2019.

In January 2026, Wilson claimed a second Triple Crown title by winning the Masters. He defeated Si Jiahui, Neil Robertson and Wu Yize on his way to the final, where he beat John Higgins. The Masters is an invitational event for the leading players, so winning it requires a series of difficult matches against elite opposition. The victory added another major achievement to Wilson’s record and demonstrated that his career had continued to progress after his world title.

By 2026, Wilson’s professional honours included ten ranking-event titles, five maximum 147 breaks and a career-high world ranking of number two. His record reflects a player who developed through setbacks, became a consistent title contender and ultimately won the sport’s biggest championship. Known as The Warrior, he has earned his reputation through resilience as much as scoring. From his first professional season in 2010 to the world title in 2024 and Masters success in 2026, Kyren Wilson’s story remains one of persistence, ambition and continued competitiveness at the highest level of snooker.
