Snooker Players Championship
The Players Championship grew out of the former Players Tour Championship where the event was known as the Players Tour Championship Finals and featured the top 24 ranked players on the tour.
Those PTC events were split between Sheffield in England and across Europe as a bridge between the amateur ranks and the professional and as a way of developing the sport across the continent.
With that in mind the inaugural Players Tour Championship Finals was held in 2011 at the Helix in the Irish capital city of Dublin where England’s Shaun Murphy defeated compatriot Martin Gould by 4 frames to 0 to pick up the first title of the new event.
The tournament stayed in the Republic of Ireland for the next 2 years but the event took place in the city of Galway at the Bailey Allen Hall.
In the first edition to be held in Galway, it was Stephen lee of England who defeated Neil Robertson of Australia, once again by 4 frames to 0.
The Australian star also reached the final of the 2013 edition were he also came up short in a losing effort to Ding Junhui of China but this time it was by 4 frames to 3.
The 2014 was all set for a huge change as it was supposed to take place in Asia but with political unrest in Thailand, the event moved only across the Irish Sea to Preston, with the action taking place from the Guild Hall.
This edition featured Barry Hawkins (England) defeating Gerard Greene (Northern Ireland) to win the final once more by 4 frames to 0.
The tournament did move to Bangkok for the 2015, with the Montien Riverside Hotel in Thailand hosting the event including the final of Joe Perry (England) vs (Mark Williams (Wales) in which Perry came out on top by 4 frames to 3.
The final edition of the Players Tour Championship Finals took place at EventCity in Manchester where Mark Allen (Northern Ireland) defeated Ricky Walden (England) 10 frames to 6 in the final.
The 2017 season brought about another change of structure and the end of the Players Tour Championship but the tournament continued to be run but not as the Tour Finals any more.
The newly styled event was given the name of the Players Championship and retained a place on the tour as a ranking event.
The first 2 editions of the new event were hosted in the Welsh season resort of Llandudno at Venue Cymru where Judd Trump (England) defeated Marco Fu (Hong Kong to win the inaugural event and with Ronnie O’Sullivan defeating Shaun Murphy in an all English 2018 final.
The 2019 edition of the event saw the action move back to Preston but with the same outcome as this time the Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan defeated Neil Robertson (Australia) by 10 frames to 4 in the final.
Things were on the move once more in 2020 as Judd Trump pick up the title in Southport but no matter where the action comes from, the great news for all fans is that you can watch all of the great action live online.
As you can see from the list of winners and runners up listed above, even if the tournament does not have the biggest prize fund and if it doesn’t have the most prestigious and longest history, it is a tournament that features many stars of the sport and features fantastic line ups that allow fans to watch great exciting action that perhaps gets overlooked via the media and more causal fans of the sport.
No matter if you are wanting to watch the Players Championship opener or the final or if you are wanting to watch the biggest star at the event or the lowest ranked player, you can do just that.
The live streaming services of the online bookmakers featured on this page allow you to pick and choose the action that you want to watch from the tournament so even if the event is shown on a tv station that you have access to, you do not need to miss any of the action that they have chosen to not show coverage of.
