ATP Lyon Tennis
The Lyon Open, often referred to simply as the ATP Lyon or locally as the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the men’s ATP Tour.
The tournament was established on the tour in 2017, to replace the Open de Nice Cote d’Azur event but professional tennis events in Lyon has a much longer history than that.
The current day event takes place in the Parc de la Tete d’or, which is a large park in the centre of Lyon that is a must visit for anybody visiting the city but for 1 week a year, all eyes move from the flowers, fountains, and attractions of the park and onto the sport of tennis for the Lyon Open.
The tournament is an ATP Tour 250 series level event that features a relatively large prize fund for its level and when you add in the fact that the event takes place in the build up to the French Open, on outdoor clay courts and close to the host of the sports only clay court Grand Slam and you have all that you need for a tournament that can attract top stars and give fans some great must see tennis action.

ATP Lyon
The Lyon Open, also known as the ATP Lyon, was established in 2017 but fans of the sport in the city have been able to enjoy top class action for much longer than that as there used to be an indoor tournament held on hard courts between 1987-2009.
The new tournament is now run as a build up match for the French Open and offers players a good warm up before the Grand Slam but also a tournament that is well worth winning in its own right.
Although the event only has a relatively low ranking on the ATP Tour, it does have a large prize fund which always helps a tournament to attract stars bigger than you would expect but this event also has the added benefit of having much more prestige than other tournaments of a similar standing thanks to been located so close to the French Open and thanks to been part of the build up to the Grand Slam.
The tournament has seen success for clay court specialists and for local stars with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga been the winner of the inaugural final when he defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic to win the first title on Lyon’s return to the ATP Tour.
The 2nd French winner was Benoit Paire in 2019, whilst Austria star Dominic Thiem won the 2018 edition by defeating local favourite Giles Simon.
There was some British success in the 2022 edition of the tournament when Cameron Norrie defeated Alex Molcan of Slovakia.
Doubles
As is the case with the majority of ATP Tour level events, the ATP Lyon also features a doublers event alongside the singles event.
The doubles side of the tournament features a mix of doubles specialists and singles stars to make for an exciting event that can also be watched live online via the streaming services found on this page.
The inaugural champions of the doubles event in Lyon were the duo of Andres Molteni of Argentina and Adil Shamasdin of Canada who defeated the duo of Marcus Daniell of New Zealand and Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil in the final.
It has been on the doubles side of the event that has seen the most success to date for British stars when the Skupski brothers (Ken and Neal) made it through to the final of the 2019 in a losing effort to Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France and Ivan Dogig of Croatia.
In the 2022 double event, it was Ivan Dodig of Croatia who teamed with Austin Krajicek of the USA to win the title when they defeated Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina and Marcelo Melo of Brazil in the final.

History
History of the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and ATP Lyon
The history of ATP Lyon begins well before the modern Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Lyon had a long-established indoor tennis tradition before the modern ATP era. The city’s indoor championships date back to 1905, while the tournament later became known as the Coupe internationale Georges Cozon, or Lyon International Indoor Tournament. That event continued until 1986 before being replaced by the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon in 1987.
The first Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon was held in 1987 at the Palais des Sports de Gerland. It was played indoors on carpet and formed part of the 1987 Nabisco Grand Prix. The inaugural singles champion was French star Yannick Noah, who defeated Sweden’s Joakim Nyström 6–4, 7–5. Noah also won the doubles title alongside Guy Forget, beating Kelly Jones and David Pate in the final.
The tournament quickly attracted major names. In 1988, Yahiya Doumbia won the singles title, while in 1989 John McEnroe defeated Jakob Hlasek 6–3, 7–6. The 1990 final saw Switzerland’s Marc Rosset beat former world No. 1 Mats Wilander 6–3, 6–2.
Pete Sampras then made Lyon his territory for a remarkable period. Sampras won the singles title three consecutive times from 1991 to 1993. In 1991 he defeated Olivier Delaitre 6–1, 6–1; in 1992 he beat Cédric Pioline 6–4, 6–2; and in 1993 he again defeated Pioline, this time 7–6, 1–6, 7–5. The run established Lyon as a venue capable of attracting players at the very top of men’s tennis.
Marc Rosset returned to the winners’ circle in 1994, defeating Jim Courier 6–4, 7–6. The tournament continued through the 1990s and 2000s, with further champions including Gustavo Kuerten, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Arnaud Clément and Sébastien Grosjean. Andy Roddick won in 2005 after beating Gaël Monfils 6–3, 6–2, while Richard Gasquet claimed the 2006 title by defeating Marc Gicquel 6–3, 6–1.
The final edition of the original Lyon tournament came in 2009. It was played indoors on hard courts at the Palais des Sports de Gerland from 26 October to 1 November. Ivan Ljubičić defeated Michaël Llodra 7–5, 6–3 in the singles final, winning the Lyon title for the second time after his earlier victory in 2001.
There was then a gap in ATP-level tennis in Lyon. The city returned to the ATP calendar in 2017 with the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Lyon. The new tournament was an ATP Tour 250 event played outdoors on clay and was scheduled during the week before Roland-Garros. It replaced the former Open de Nice Côte d’Azur on the ATP calendar.
The first champion of the modern Lyon Open was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In the 2017 final, Tsonga defeated Tomáš Berdych 7–6(2), 7–5. Dominic Thiem then won the 2018 edition, recovering from losing the first set against Gilles Simon to win 3–6, 7–6(1), 6–1. In 2019, Frenchman Benoît Paire captured the title by beating Félix Auger-Aliassime 6–4, 6–3.
The tournament was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It returned in 2021, when Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Cameron Norrie 6–3, 6–3. Norrie went one step further in 2022, winning the championship against Alex Molčan 6–3, 6–7(3), 6–1.
Arthur Fils became the next French champion in 2023. Still one of the emerging names in men’s tennis, Fils defeated Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo 6–3, 7–5 in the final. In 2024, another young French player, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, won the title, defeating Tomás Etcheverry 6–4, 1–6, 7–6(7). The 2024 tournament proved to be the final edition of the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Lyon in its clay-court format.
The event was absent from the 2025 ATP calendar, creating another brief gap in Lyon’s top-level tennis story. It returned in 2026 under a new identity: the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The tournament is again classified as an ATP 250, but its circumstances are very different from those of the 2017–2024 event.
The 2026 edition represents a significant reset. It moves indoors to the LDLC Arena in Lyon-Décines and switches from outdoor clay to indoor hard court. The ATP calendar lists the tournament for the week beginning 19 October 2026, while the event’s official site gives the tournament dates as 18–25 October. The ATP calendar records Lyon as one of three ATP 250 events that week, alongside Almaty and Brussels.
This change means that the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes tennis tournament combines several distinct eras of Lyon tennis. Its roots lie in the city’s historic indoor championships; its original ATP-era Grand Prix began in 1987; its modern incarnation returned in 2017 as an outdoor clay tournament; and its latest chapter begins in 2026 as an indoor hard-court ATP 250.
The roll call of former Lyon champions also gives the tournament considerable pedigree. Yannick Noah, John McEnroe and Pete Sampras feature in the original event’s history, while the more recent Open Parc era produced champions such as Tsonga, Thiem, Tsitsipas, Norrie, Fils and Mpetshi Perricard.
That makes the 2026 Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes more than a new entry on the ATP schedule. It is the latest evolution of a Lyon tennis tradition that has survived changes of venue, surface, tournament structure and even lengthy periods away from the ATP Tour. If history is any indication, Lyon has a habit of producing memorable champions. The next chapter begins indoors, on hard court, at the LDLC Arena — and this time, the tennis balls have nowhere to hide.
