ATP Moselle Open

The Moselle Open, known as the Open de Moselle until 2010, is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a 250 Series ranked event.

The tournament is part of a group of 250 Series events to take place in France alongside the Open13, the Open Sud de France and the Open de Nice Cote d’Azur.

As one of the smaller events on the ATP most of the players at the event are from the lower reaches of the top 100 ranked players on the ATP Tour but the Moselle Open also attracts a number of top 20 players, especially those from France and the surrounding countries.

Taking place in the city of Metz, the Moselle Open is played on indoor hard courts and other the last decade or so the event has been dominated by local stars. The tournament can trace its history back to 1980 and whilst the event hasn’t gone ahead every year since then, it has been held annually since 2003.

There have been some doubts over the hosting of the event, with lots of talks of moving over the Far East, but for now the tournament is still to be held in France and is still a great watch for tennis fans.

ATP Metz

The Moselle Open, also known as the ATP Metz, has a long history but it has been a history full of change including in name, location, venue and ranking.

The tournament has taken place at both the Parc des Expositions de Metz Metropole and its current home of Arenes de Metz in its current location and it has been both an ATP International Series level event and an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event.

One of the biggest changes to the tournament, that takes place on indoor hard courts, is it joining the other ATP 250 Series level events to be held in France as almost a mini set of tournaments amongst all of the other as many players play in all four and try to pick up the 250 series French slam.

Although the tournament has a relatively lowly ranking on the ATP Tour, it does offer a decent prize fund and with so many European based players within easy travel of the event, it still manages to attract a decent quality of field and one that other similar ranked event similar cannot offer fans.

As you would expect from a tournament such as the ATP Metz, the majority of players to have enjoyed success at the event come from the host nation with the likes of Arnaud Clement (who won the inaugural Metz event in 2003), Jerome Haehnel, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lucas Pouille all winning on at least 1 occasion.

Non-French winners have included the likes of Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and David Goffin (Belgium) whilst Britain’s won Andy Murray was the runner up in 2007 in a losing effort to Tommy Robredo of Spain.

As was the case with most tournaments, there was no event held in 2020 and since its return, it has been European stars who have enjoy success with Hubert Hurkacz (Poland) winning in 2021 and Lorenzo Sonego (Italy) winning in 2022.

As with the vast majority of tournaments on the men’s ATP World Tour, the ATP Metz also features a doubles event and the great news for all fans of tennis is that you can also watch all of the doubles action live online as well.

The doubles side of the draw features a good mix of both doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty and it has been in the doubles event that the majority of success for British stars has been found.

The all British pairing of Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski won the 2009 edition against home favourites Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra whilst Jamie Murray won the 2011 edition alongside partners Andre Sa of Brazil against Marcelo Melo (Brazil) and Lukas Dlouhy (Czech Republic).

If you are a fan of tennis you will know how frustrating it can be to watch tournament such as the ATP Metz on British television as even if you are lucky enough to have an expensive and on going subscription to a pay tv sports channel that features tennis, you will likely only get a selection of the action from France.
