ATP Cincinnati
In the early years of the tournament, it was very much a local affair, with each and every tournament final between 1899 and 1960 been played between 2 American players. It was Miguel Olvera of Ecuador who broke that run by defeating Crawford Henry to pick up the title.
Aside from the odd win here or there, US players continued to dominate right through until the 1980’s when it was the turn of the Swedes as Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg dominated the tournament with a joint 6 wins between 1983 and 1990.
In the 90’s local favourites rose to the top once more with Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras dominated but since then it has been mostly Europeans winning the tournament with the Swiss Superstar Roger Federer winning on 7 occasions whilst Britain’s own Andy Murray has also won on 2 occasions.
Since Federer last win in 2015, the winner has been shared across a number of stars of the sport including Novak Djokovic (2018 and 2020), Grigor Dimitrov (in 2017), Daniil Medvedev (in 2019) and Alexander Zverev (in 2021).

History
History of the Cincinnati Masters
1899: The tournament begins
The history of the Cincinnati Masters began in 1899, when the tournament was established as the Cincinnati Open. Its first edition was played on outdoor courts in the Cincinnati area, during a period when lawn tennis was expanding rapidly in popularity across the United States. The sport had developed from nineteenth-century racket games into an organised competitive activity, and local tournaments provided important opportunities for players to compete and build reputations.
The inaugural competition took place at the Avondale Athletic Club. The event was originally played on clay courts, a detail that contrasts sharply with the hard courts associated with the modern Cincinnati Open. In its early years, the tournament was much smaller in scale than today’s international event, but its establishment laid the foundation for more than a century of competitive tennis.
The early twentieth century: Building a tennis tradition
During the early twentieth century, the Cincinnati tournament developed alongside the growth of American tennis. The United States was becoming an important force in international competition, and domestic tournaments helped players prepare for national championships and matches against leading international opponents. The Cincinnati event became part of this developing competitive landscape.
As tennis evolved, so did the tournament’s importance. Changes in equipment, playing styles and tournament organisation gradually transformed the sport. Early competitors played with wooden rackets and relied on techniques that differed considerably from the powerful baseline exchanges seen today. Serve-and-volley tennis, court positioning and touch were central features of many matches, while modern professional players benefit from advances in racket materials, sports science and physical conditioning.
The tournament’s long history has not been completely uninterrupted. Like many established sporting events, it has experienced periods of disruption and change. Its survival across different eras is a major reason the Cincinnati Open remains an important part of American tennis history.
1960s: The Open Era changes tennis
A defining moment in tennis history arrived in 1968 with the beginning of the Open Era. Before this change, major tournaments generally separated amateur players from professionals, preventing many of the strongest competitors from meeting in the same events. The new system allowed professionals and amateurs to compete together in recognised tournaments, fundamentally changing the sport’s structure.
The Cincinnati tournament continued through this transformation and eventually became part of the modern professional tour system. The Open Era increased the commercial importance of tennis, expanded international competition and helped create the professional environment familiar to contemporary fans. Players increasingly travelled around the world to compete for ranking points, prize money and titles, making tournaments such as Cincinnati more significant on the international calendar.
1970s and 1980s: Professional tennis grows
During the 1970s and 1980s, professional tennis became increasingly organised and commercially successful. The men’s Grand Prix circuit and later the Association of Tennis Professionals structure helped establish a clearer framework for elite competition. The Cincinnati tournament became more closely associated with the highest level of men’s professional tennis.
The period also brought major changes in how the sport was played. Although wooden rackets remained common for much of the early part of this era, newer racket materials gradually enabled players to generate greater power and spin. Fitness training became more systematic, and the pace of professional tennis increased. These developments helped create the athletic, physically demanding game that would dominate later decades.
For Cincinnati, the challenge was to preserve its established identity while keeping pace with a rapidly changing sport. Its continued presence on the calendar helped reinforce its reputation as a tournament with both tradition and competitive importance.
1979: A new home in Mason, Ohio
In 1979, the tournament moved to its current general location at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, north of Cincinnati. The move provided a dedicated tennis venue with the space needed to accommodate the development of the event. The facility subsequently expanded as the tournament attracted larger crowds, more prominent players and increasing international attention.
The location in Mason explains why the event is often associated with Cincinnati even though it is not staged in the city’s central area. The tournament’s name reflects its historical connection to Cincinnati, while the venue serves the wider metropolitan region. Over time, the Lindner Family Tennis Center became one of the most recognisable facilities in American professional tennis.
1990: The men’s tournament joins the ATP Championship Series
A major step in the tournament’s development came in 1990, when the men’s event became part of the ATP Championship Series, the predecessor to the ATP Masters Series and today’s ATP Masters 1000 category. This development strengthened the Cincinnati tournament’s position within the top tier of men’s professional tennis.
The Masters 1000 structure groups together major non-Grand Slam tournaments that award substantial ranking points and attract the world’s leading players. The Cincinnati event became an important target for competitors seeking prestigious titles and valuable points ahead of the US Open. Its position on the calendar made it especially useful for players preparing for the final Grand Slam of the season.
The 2000s: A modern international tennis destination
During the 2000s, the Cincinnati tournament continued to develop into a major international sporting event. The venue underwent improvements, while television coverage and global tennis audiences increased the tournament’s visibility. Its role in the North American hard-court swing became particularly important as fans looked for clues about which players were in form before the US Open.
The event also benefited from the growing popularity of international tennis stars. The era featured champions such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, whose achievements helped attract worldwide attention to elite tournaments. Cincinnati became one of the important stages on which leading players tested their form, pursued Masters titles and built rivalries that extended across multiple seasons.
Women’s tennis also grew in prominence at the venue. The tournament’s combined men’s and women’s format provided spectators with access to high-level competition across both tours, increasing its appeal to a broad audience.
2004–2018: Roger Federer’s remarkable Cincinnati record
Roger Federer became one of the tournament’s defining champions, winning the men’s singles title seven times: in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015. His record illustrates how effectively his game suited the conditions in Cincinnati. His precise serving, aggressive positioning and ability to take the ball early made him exceptionally difficult to beat on the tournament’s hard courts.
Federer’s repeated success also helped establish the Cincinnati Masters as a familiar stop for tennis fans following the sport’s biggest rivalries. Matches involving Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and other leading players often carried implications beyond the immediate title race, offering a preview of potential Grand Slam encounters and highlighting differences in playing style.
2011–2018: Serena Williams and the women’s competition
Serena Williams was another significant champion in Cincinnati history, winning the women’s singles title in 2014 and 2015. Her success reflected the growing prominence of the women’s event and the tournament’s importance within the WTA calendar.
Women’s tennis has produced many compelling Cincinnati storylines, with major champions and emerging players competing for a prestigious title ahead of the US Open. The tournament’s position in August makes it an important opportunity for players to build momentum, test their hard-court games and make a statement before the final Grand Slam of the year.
2020: The tournament relocates to New York
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented disruption to professional tennis in 2020. With international travel restrictions, public-health concerns and strict safety requirements affecting sporting events worldwide, the Cincinnati tournament was relocated to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The event was staged there immediately before the US Open, allowing organisers to operate both tournaments within a more controlled environment.
The temporary relocation was one of the most unusual chapters in the Cincinnati Masters’ history. Although the tournament retained its identity, players competed at a different venue under exceptional conditions, with pandemic-related restrictions affecting the usual atmosphere and spectator experience.
2021 onwards: Returning to Mason and looking ahead
The tournament returned to Mason in 2021, restoring the Lindner Family Tennis Center as its home. The return marked an important step towards normality after the disruptions of the pandemic and allowed the event to reconnect with its established venue and local audience.
In subsequent years, the Cincinnati Open continued to evolve as the professional tours adjusted their schedules and tournament formats. The men’s event remained a prominent ATP Masters 1000 competition, while the women’s event retained its place among the WTA’s leading 1000-level tournaments. Both continued to attract top-ranked players and provide valuable preparation for the US Open.
2025–2026: Expansion and the modern Cincinnati Open
A major development arrived in 2025, when the Cincinnati Open introduced an expanded 96-player singles draw and a longer tournament schedule. The expanded format provided more players with the opportunity to compete and increased the amount of high-level tennis available to spectators. The event also extended across a longer period, reflecting the broader changes taking place within the professional tours.
These developments represent the latest stage in a history that began with a relatively small tournament in 1899. The modern Cincinnati Open is now a major international tennis event, combining a historic identity with the commercial reach, global audience and athletic demands of contemporary professional sport.
From its early days on clay courts to today’s elite hard-court competition, the Cincinnati Masters has continually adapted to the changing landscape of tennis. Its longevity, champion players and position immediately before the US Open ensure that it remains one of the most closely watched tournaments on the summer tennis calendar.
