ATP Monte Carlo

The Monte-Carlo Masters is also known as the ATP Monte Carlo and the ATP Monaco, with some also knowing it as the Monaco Masters and the ATP Monaco but no matter what you call the event, there can be no denying that this historic clay court tennis tournament is one of the most eagerly awaited event son the tennis calendar and it is an event that is a must watch for tennis fans – especially for clay court fans.

Historic Event

The historic event was inaugurated in 1897, which not only makes its own of the oldest clay court tournaments to still be in action but it is also one of the oldest tennis tournaments to still be in existence.

As you would expect from a tournament with such prestige and with such a long history, there have been a lots of changes throughout the years.

It took until 1969 from the tournament to become an ‘Open’ event and between 1970-1972, the event became a major tournament on the Grand Prix Tour, which was part of the Grand Prix Super Series top tier of tennis events.

Up and Down Years

The tournament also made that level between 1978-1989 but in between those years, the tournament was downgraded. In 1973, the event was part of the Spring Mediterranean Circuit and between 1974-1977, the Monte Carlo tennis tournament was part of the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit.

Slow Progression

In 1990, the event became an ATP Championship Series Single week tennis event and it wasn’t until 2009, when the tournament’s progression led to it becoming a Masters 1000 level event and to become one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world outside of the 4 Grand Slams.

Top Stars

The winners of the tournament almost reads as a who’s who of the tennis world and also gives a great insight into the sport for any given era.

British Success

The first 11 events held in Monte-Carlo where won by just 3 men and all 3 of those were English, with only Victor Voss of Germany breaking up an all English dominance for the first decade or so.

Reginald Doherty and Laurence Docherty, 2 brothers, shared the first 10 titles at the tournament.

The first non-Brit to win the event was Anthony Wilding, an Australian in 1908 with the first American winner coming the next year after the title was won by Fred Alexander.

Max Decugis became the first European winner in 1910 and the first ‘home’ winner, before Wilding won the next 4 events.

Jozsef Asboth became the first African winner in 1948 and it was Tom Okker of The Netherlands who picked up the first title of the Open era in 1969.

Open Era

The 1970’s were dominated by 2 legends of the sport with Ille Nastase and Bjorn Bord winning on multiple occasions.

The next dominant force came about in the mid-2000’s when Rafael Nadal dominated the event by winning it between 2005-2012 and between 2016-18.

As with the majority of tournaments at the ATP Tour level, the Monte-Carlo Masters also features a doubles event, which first started in 1968 when Sergei Likhachev and Alex Metreveli, of the then USSR, defeat ‘local’ favourites Patrice Beust and Daniel Contet of France in the final.

New Millennium

Nowadays, the doubles event features a great mix of doubles specialist’s and singles players who are double duty with the Bryan Brothers dominating the modern era.

At the 2022 edition, it was rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece who defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain to win the men’s singles title whilst there was some British success in the doubles event, when Joe Salisbury teamed up with Rajeev Ram of the USA to defeat the Colombian duo of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the final.

History

The Monte-Carlo Masters may not be played in Monte-Carlo and it may not be played in Principality of Monaco that it represents but one it does have is a long history that can rival most historic tournaments and even the big Grand Slams.

It is perhaps that lack of identity that saw the majority of early winners come from across the globe with Max Decugis been the French player to win the title before the outbreak of World War 1.

British Dominance

In fact it was British stars who dominated much of the first 2 decades of the tournament, including Reginald Doherty who won the 3 titles and it was either himself or his brother Laurence who won each of the first 10 events.

Other early winners came from as afar a field as Australia and the US but in the post WW1 era, winners from all over started to enjoy success with European players having the most title wins.

Post War

After another pause in the action due to World War 2, the 40’s and 50’s saw stars from across the US, Africa and Europe enjoy success at the tournament, with no one player really taking control of the tournament until the early 1970’s when Romania’s Ille Nastase won 3 straight titles between 71-74.
The end of the 70’s and into the 80’s saw the emergence of the big Swedish stars, with Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Henrik Sunstrom and Joakim Nystrom all enjoying success during the period.

Modern Era

In the 1990’s, it was a host of European stars who enjoyed success with Austria’s Thomas Muster with 3 titles in that decade but as has been the case at so many big clay court tournaments, for much the early part of this Millennium, it has been Spanish star Rafa Nadal who has dominated the event with 11 titles between 2005-2018 including an incredible 8 straight titles between 2005-2012.

Current Era

In the 2021 edition it was young Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas who built on his promise to show he has the ability to win at one of the biggest tournament son the ATP Tour.
