Rosmalen Grass Court Championships
The Rosmalen Grass Court Championships, formally known by the slightly less impressive name of the Ricoh Open due to sponsorship reasons, is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP World Tour where it is a ATP 250 series ranked event and on the women’s WTA Tour where it is an International Tournament ranked event.
Held at the Autotron Park in the Dutch town of Rosmalen, the event is played on outdoor Grass Court’s which makes the tournament an important event for players in their preparations for Wimbledon Championships.
The tournament has a near 30-year history on the men’s side of the event and whilst the women’s event hasn’t the same history, it still attracts many of the world’s leading players which gives the events small flavour of a major event.
As one of the smaller host towns, Rosmallen has a population of just 35,000, for a professional tennis tournament, the event attracts fans from all across central Europe which gives the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships a unique atmosphere. The tournament is now one of the biggest sporting events held in The Netherlands and the great news is that you can watch all of the action live.
ATP Rosmalen
On the men’s ATP Tour, the event is known as the ATP Rosmalen where it is an ATP World Tour 250 Series level event although down the year sit has also been an ATP World Series level event and an ATP International Series level event.
Although the event has a relatively low ranking, the fact that it is a grass court tournament close by and taking place near to the Wimbledon Championships, it will come as no surprise that the tournament attracts a decent field of competitors.
Rosmalen also offers a pretty decent prize fund on the ATP Tour, which again makes sure that plenty of top 10 stars appear but as with many tournament, the best indicator of the quality of the event can be deemed from the list of past winners and that is certainly true for this tournament.
Amongst the household names to pick up the title and winner’s purse at the event are Richard Krajicek (the Netherlands), Pat Rafter (Australia), Lleyton Hewitt (Australia), Michael Llodra (France), David Ferrer (Spain), Nicolas Mahut (France), Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain), Gilles Muller (Luxembourg) and Richard Gasquet (France).
As with the majority of main tour events, the ATP Rosmalen also has a doubles event that run alongside the doubles event which sees top singles stars pull double duty and compete against plenty of high quality doubles specialists.
It has been in the doubles event that Britain has enjoyed its only success at the event with Dominic Inglot been the first Brit to make it to the final when he teamed with Raven Klaasen (South Africa) in a losing effort to Mate Pavic (Croatia) and Michael Venus (Australia).
He went one step further in both 2018 and 2019 when he won the title in Germany teaming with Franko Skugor (Croatia) to defeat Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus in 2018 and teaming with Austin Krajicek (the United States of America) to defeat Marcus Daniell (Australia) and Wesley Koolhof (The Netherlands) to win the 2019 event.
After a long break in the action from s-Hertogenbosch, the tournament returned for the 2022 season, and it was a good return for home fans on the men’s side of the draw.
It was home favourite Tim van Ritjhoven who picked up the singles title and it was Wesley Koolhof who returned to defend his doubles title but this time he won alongside British doubles star Neal Skupski.

WTA Rosmalen
On the women’s side of the event, the action goes under the banner of the WTA Rosmalen, where it is a WTA International level event after been a WTA Tier III level event between 1996-2008.
Just like on the men’s side of the draw, the tournament acts as a great warm up event for the Wimbledon Championship and with only a small number of grass court tournaments available, the event manages to attract stars that usually would not be seen at a tournament with a similar number of ranking points or with such a relatively small prize fund.
That quality of field is once more highlighted by the past winners of the WTA Rosmalen including Martina Hingis (Switzerland), Justin Henin (Belgium), Kim Clijsters (Belgium), Mary Pierce (France), Simona Halep (Romania) and Coco Vandeweghe (the United States of America).
Just as on the ATP side of the event, the WTA side of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships also features a doubles tournament which also features a mix of doubles specialist and singles players doing double duty.
Amongst the big names to win the doubles event are Elena Dementieva (alongside Lina Krasnoroutskaya, both Russia) in 2003, Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia) and Kirsten Flipkens (Belgium) in 2017 and Elise Mertens (Belgium, alongside Demi Schuurs, The Netherlands) in 2018.
For the events return to the WTA Tour in 2022, it was Aryna Sabalenka who picked up the title as the top seed in the singles event.
In the doubles event, the title went to Ellen Perez of Australia and her partner Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia.
