Adelaide International Tennis

The Adelaide International is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the men’s ATP Tour and women’s WTA Tour and the great news for all tennis fans is that you can watch all of the action live online via our tennis live stream partners.

The tournament was a new edition to the calendar in 2020 where it replaced the Sydney International with all of the action taking place at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre in the Australian city of Adelaide.

The event features matches played on outdoor hard courts and takes place at the start of the season in the build up to the Australian Open.

On the men’s side of the draw the tournament is an ATP Tour 250 Series ranked event whilst on the women’s side it is a WTA Premier level event.

Watch Tennis From Adelaide Live

Over the past decade or so, the sport of tennis has enjoy somewhat of a resurgence in interest, participation, and success out on the court in Australia and much of that has been developed around its Grand Slam, the Australian Open held in the Victorian city of Melbourne and the fact that due to its location in the southern hemisphere is able to host tournament when other major tennis areas, such as Europe, struggle.

That has enabled the country, which of course has a heavy dominance in the Oceania region, to grow a number of tournaments not just in the big urban areas of the east coast but also in cities such as Adelaide in the state of South Australia.

Whilst a well-known city, Adelaide is one that often goes overlooked when it comes to major sporting events and teams with the country’s biggest competition, the NRL (National Rugby League), not having a team established and based in the city- although they do attract some one of matches from time to time.

That helps the capital of the South Australia draws good crowds to events such as the relatively newly formed Adelaide International.

First established in 2020, the new tennis tournament was 10 years in the making as the establishment of the Brisbane International, in Queensland, left the city without an ATP or WTA level tournament.

The city did still offer a tennis event however with the World Tennis Challenge offering a chance for past players and former fans favourite to thrill the fans but there is nothing quite like a world tour level event.

When the ATP Tour announced the formation of the ATP Cup and the end of the Hopman Cup, alongside the shrinking and condensing of other events, the city of Adelaide and the South Australian State Government leapt into action and announced a multi-million dollar refurbishment of the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre in Adelaide. This included a canopy roof structure and helped the city to come to an agreement with Tennis Australia to host a newly formed tennis event.

When announced, that new tournament became known as the Adelaide International and it was also decided that it would appear on both the WTA and ATP Tours, which allowed it to attract stars of both the men’s game and the women’s game as they look to build on their Australian Open preparations.

History

In the inaugural event, the fans in attendance had something to cheer as it was home favourite Ashleigh Barty who defeated Dayana Yastremska, from the Ukraine, in the final to pick up the first title and trophy on the WTA side of the tour whilst Russian star, Andrey Rublev defeated Lloyd Harris, from South Africa, in the final of the ATP side of the event.

In the second edition of the tournament it was Iga Swiatek of Poland who picked up the title against Belinda Bencic in a much changed tournament that saw the event move to Melbourne and only feature players from the women’s WTA Tour.

Alex Guarachi (Chile) and Desirae Krawczyk (USA) won the doubles event by defeating Hayley Carter (USA) and Luisa Stefani (Brazil) in the final.

In the 2022 event, home fans once again had something to cheer as Ashleigh Barty followed up her 2020 win at the event once again by defeating Elena Rybakina of Kazahkstan in straight sets.

She would go on to the do the double at the event by teaming up with fellow Aussie Storm Sanders to win the women’s double tournament by defeating Darija Jurak Schreiber in the final.

In the ATP tournament at the 2022 event, it was Gael Monfils who turned back the clock to pick up the win when he defeated Karen Khachanov in the men’s singles final, once again in straight sets.

The doubles event was won by the Indian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Rananathan, who defeated Ivan Dogig (Croatia) and Marcelo Melo (Brazil).

Unfortunately as a relatively new tournament, with a relatively ranking on both tours and with the action taking place in the middle of the night for those tennis fans based in the United Kingdom, the event can be difficult to watch on this side of the world.
