WTA Birmingham

The Birmingham Classic is a professional tennis tournament played on the Women’s WTA Tour where it is Premier Level event and often goes by the name of WTA Birmingham.

The tournament offers a decent sized prize fund and well received venue that allows it to attract many household names to go up against solid pro and young up and coming stars but perhaps where the tournament stands out over similar ranked tournaments is the fact that the event is one of the leading tournaments in the build up to the Wimbledon Championships.

The grass court season has continued to get shorter and shorter over the past few decades and the chance for players to have a good quality and competitive warm up event on grass courts has become quite a struggle but tournaments such as this one has led the way and that helps it to attract a good playing field and to give fans lots of great entertainment.

All of the action at the Birmingham Classic takes place at the Edgbaston Priory Club, a private members tennis and squash club located near to the iconic Cricket ground in the Edgbaston region of Birmingham.

Whilst there are a number of courts at the club, the main stadium court used for the WTA Birmingham is capable of hosting around 2,500 fans.

The tournament was first established way back in 1982 and for much of the first decade or so it was USA stars who dominated things in Birmingham. It was Billy Jean King who won the first 2 titles at the event, before her compatriot Pam Shriver won 4 straight editions.

The first non US winner was Claudia Kohde-Kilsch who defeat Shriver in 1988, before American stars dominated once more with Martina Navratilova, Zina Garrison, Lori McNeil and Meredith McGrath amongst the stars from across the Atlantic to win in the late 1980-1990’s.

The 2000’s saw the transfer of power from across the Atlantic to across the Channel as European stars became the dominant force with the likes of Maria Sharapova (Russia), Jelena Jankovic (Serbia), Sabine Lisicki (Germany) and Daniela Hantuchova (Slovakia) all winning.

In 2010, Li Na of China become the first winner form Asia in Birmingham when she defeated Maria Sharapova just a year after been runner up to pick up the title.

In 2014, the tournament moved to a Premier level event and attracted a host of the biggest stars with winners during this era of the event including stars such as Ana Ivanovic (Serbia), Angelique Kerber (Germany), Madison Keys (the United States of America), Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) and Ashleigh Barty (Australia).

As is the case of the majority of events on the WTA Tour, the Birmingham Classic also offers a doubles event alongside the singles event and the great news for fans is that you can also enjoy that action live online via our live streaming partners.

The doubles event features a mixture of doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty but it has been in the doubles event that has seen the only British success and that came in the very first edition of the tournament when British duo of Jo Durie and Anne Hobbs team up to defeat Rosie Casals (USA) and Wendy Turnbull (Australia) to pick up the inaugural tournament.

The 2021 edition of the event saw Ons Jabeur, of Tunisia, pick up the title whilst Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated Zhang Shuai in the 2022 final.
