WTA Charleston

The Charleston Open, still known to many as the Family Circle Cup after a long time sponsorship deal and simply as the WTA Charleston, is a professional tennis tournament on the women’s WTA Tour that has a long history dating back to 1973, although the tournament has spent a lot of its history away from its current home in Charleston.

Originally, the tournament was held between 1973-2000 at the Sea Pines Resort (Sea Pines Plantation) on the Hilton Head Island near to the Georgia border in South Carolina.

The event did have a brief sojourn to Amelia Island just off of the coast of Florida in 1975 and 1976.

In the year 2001, the first edition of the tournament came from its current home at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

The matches at the tennis club take place on outdoor hard courts but unlike the vast majority of clay courts on the WTA Tour that are mostly red or even sometimes blue, the surface at the Charleston Open is green and that gives a unique look and feel to the tournament.

The complex in Charleston has a number of courts but the majority of matches, including all of the biggest ones and the finals, all take place on the main centre court which is capable of hosting over 10,000 fans.

Just as the tournament has undergone changes to venue and location down the years, it has also undergone changing to its ranking and placing on the WTA Tour.

The first non-American winner was Steffi Graf of Germany who won the 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1993 editions.

Other big name winners to win the tournament in the modern era include the likes of Martina Hingis (Switzerland), Mary Pierce (France), Justine Henin (Belgium), Venus Williams (the United States of America), Serena Williams (the United States of America), Samantha Stosur (Australia), Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), Angelique Kerber (Germany), Sloane Stephens (the United States of America), Kiki Bertens (The Netherlands) and Madison Keys (the United States of America).

In the 2022 edition of the event, it was Belinda Bencic who picked up the title after defeating Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the final.
