WTA Nanchang
The snappily title Jiangxi International Women’s Tennis Open also goes by the much easier to remember name of the WTA Nanchang, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on the women’s WTA Tour in the city of Nanchang which is the capital city of the Jiangxi province.
The tournament, which has the host venue of the Nanchang International Tennis Center, is a WTA International level event where the matches are played on hard courts.
The tournament was inaugurated back in 2014 where it is now part of the China Open series, where a number of events are played with similar conditions and in the build up to the biggest event in China.
An interesting little titbit of this event is that the best performing Chinese player at the event gains a wild card into the China Open and the chance to play against the top stars in the sport and to earn big ranking points and of course a great pay day.
Down the years, it has been shown time and time again that to gain that wildcard, you need to not only perform well but you need to show the winning instinct and pick up the title as the majority of tournaments have been won by local players.
That was the case in the first edition of the tournament when the event was a WTA 125k level tournament which featured an all Chinese line up for the final as Peng Shuai defeated Liu Fangzhou for the first title in Nanchang.
The 2015 edition was at the same level and featured the first European winner as Jelena Jankovic of Serbia won the title in a final victory against Chang Kai-chen.
By the 2016 edition, the tournament stepped up to a WTA International level event and this saw lots more competition for the title but also lots of success for home favourites with the 2016, 2017 and 2018 edition all won by Chinese players.
In 2016, Duan Yingying defeated Vania King of the United States, in 2017 Peng Shuai won once again by defeating Nao Hibino in the final whilst the 2018 edition featured another all Chinese final when Wang Qiang defeated Zheng Saisai.
In 2019, the tournament featured Rebecca Peterson of Sweden as the first Scandinavian winner.
As with the majority of tennis tournament on the women’s WTA Tour, the Jiangxi Open also features a doubles event alongside the singles event and the great news for all tennis fans is that no matter if you want to watch the singles event or the doubles event you can do.
