WTA Seoul
The Korea Open is a professional tennis tournament that is held on the women’s WTA Tour where it is an International level event.
As you would expect, the tournament takes place in the capital city of Seoul with the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center hosting the event where the action is played on outdoor hard courts.
Unsurprisingly, the Olympic Park tennis complex where the event takes place was built for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and features a number of courts including an impressive stadium court.
The venue is also the home for many South Korean Davis Cup ties and it has also hosted a number of Fed Cup ties but for 1 week every year all eyes are on the WTA Tour and the Korea Open.
As the tournament only has a relatively low ranking and a relatively low prize fund, you may think that the tournament would struggle for star names and whilst it does feature a mix of solid pros, local stars and youngster trying to make a name for itself, the tournaments great location in the major metropolis of Seoul and the fantastic host venue for the tournament does help it to attract a few big stars for each event.
That makes sure that the tournament has lots to keep all fans entertained, from big match up to never before seen matches and that makes it a must watch tournament for all tennis fans.
There are lots of metrics that you can look at to determine the quality of any event but one easy way to do that it to look at the players who have gone onto to reach the final at the tournament and of course who have gone on to pick up the title.
The tournament was inaugurated way back in 2004 as the tour looked to expand in Asia and since then the WTA Korea Open has really led the way.
It was Russian superstar who won the inaugural WTA Seoul title in 2004 when she defeated Marta Domachowska in the final.
Amongst the other household names to win in Seoul are Venus Williams (of the United States who defeated Maria Kirilenko in the 2007 final), Caroline Wozniacki (of Denmark who defeated Kaia Kanepi to win the 2012 edition), Agnieszka Radwanska (of Poland who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the 2013 final), Karolina Pliskova (of the Czech Republic who defeated Varvara Lepchenko in the 2014 final), Jelena Ostapenko (of Latvia who defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia in the 2017 final) and Kiki Bertens (of The Netherlands who defeat Ajila Tomljanovic in the 2018 final).
The 2019 edition was won by Karolina Muchova before it took a year off in 2020.
Upon its return, the tournament was a WTA 125 level event and saw Zhu Lin pick up the title before it became a WTA 250 level event in 2022, when Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia picked up the title.
As with the majority of tournaments on the WTA Tour, the Korea Open also features a doubles tournament alongside the singles event and the great news for all fans is that you can also watch all of that great action as well.
The doubles tournament features a mix of doubles specialists meeting singles players doing double duty for some entertaining tennis.
If you are a fan of tennis you will know just how difficult it can be trying to watch a tournament such as the WTA Seoul live on British television as even if you have an ongoing and expensive subscription to a pay tv sports channel that offers tennis coverage, the chances are that only a select number of matches at best will be shown live.
That can lead to the frustrating experience of missing out on your favourite player or on the match you were looking forward to the most but that great news for all tennis fans is that you can now watch all of the great action from the tournament and you can pick and choose the action that you want to watch.
No matter if you are wanting to watch the tournament opener or the WTA Seoul final, you can do.
