WTA Palermo
The Palermo Open, also known locally as the Internazionali Femminili di Palermo or more commonly simply as WTA Palermo, is a professional tennis tournament on the women’s WTA Tour that sees matches played on outdoor clay courts at the Country Time Club in the city of Palermo, on the Italian island of Sicily.
The complex is one of the smallest to host a tournament on the tour but it does offer a range of courts and with the beach just a short drive away on one of Italy’s holiday islands, it is no surprise that the event is popular with players and fans alike.
The WTA Palermo has a long history dating back to 1988 but it is a tournament that has undergone many changes down the years including name changes, category changes and even location changes.
Between 1990-92, the tournament was a WTA Tier V level event before dropping down to a WTA Tier IV level event between 1993-2000).
It then moved up to a Tier V level event once more between 2001-2004 before dropping back down to a Tier IV level event between 2005-08).
When the WTA made changes to their tournament categories, the Palermo Open became a WTA International Tournaments level event between 2009-13 and from 2019 onwards.
That break between 2014-18 was due to the license of the tournament been sold for 6 years, with the event moving the Kuala Lumper and becoming the Malaysian Open.
Upon its return to Palermo, the event was won by Swiss star Jil Teichmann, with Fiona Ferro of France winning in 2020.
The 2021 edition saw the first non-European win when American Danielle Collins picked up the title before Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu win in 2022 to bring the trophy back to the continent.

The tournament may not have the biggest prize fund on offer and it may not be able to offer a big number of world ranking points but that does not stop the event attracting many of the world greatest stars.

The 2012 (Sara Errani once more) and 2013 (Roberta Vinci) editions of the tournament also saw Italian home favourites pick up the title with the 2013 edition once more seeing an all Italian final in the last edition before the event moved continents to South East Asia.
On the events return to Island of Sicily it was the Swiss player Jill Teichmann who picked up the title in a shock victory over Kiki Bertens in the final.
Alongside the women’s singles event, there is also a full doubles event, all of which can also be watch live online.
The doubles tournament features a mix of singles competitors doing literal doubler duty as well as doubles specialists which allows for some great action and for some new and interesting match ups between players that you normally don’t see facing off out on the court.
Past winners and finalists in the doubles event have included the likes of France’s Mary Pierce, Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder, Germany’s Julia Gorges and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova, in a tournament that has been dominated by European players.
It has also been European stars who have dominated the singles event at the Palermo Open as well with players such as Frances Mary Peirce, Romanian Irina Spirlea, Russian Dinara Safina, Dutch star Kiki Bertens and Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues who won the vent on an incredible 5 occasions including 3 straight events between 2004-06, all winning or reaching the final down the years.
