Women’s Tennis Tour Finals

The WTA Tour Finals features the best of the best from the women’s tennis tour taking on each other to try and win one of the most prestigious titles in the sport and also one of the largest prize funds.

The tournament has a long history going back to its inaugural event in 1972 but since then it has undergone a number of changes to its name, to its format, to its location and to the playing surface the matches are played on.

Between 1972-1973 the action was played in the city of Boca Raton in Florida on outdoor clay courts before moving to the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena between 1974-1976 when the matches moved indoors and were played on carpet.

The 1977 edition was hosted by the iconic Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City where matches were once again played on carpet.

The surface stayed the same for the next year but the action moved to the Oakland Arena in Oakland before moving back to Madison Square Garden form where the event was hosted between 1979-2000.

The tournament moved to Europe for the first time in the year 2001 when the Olympiahalle in the German city of Munich host the tournament, with the matches played on hard courts.

The tournament soon moved back across the Atlantic with the Staples Center is LA hosted the event between 2002-2005, with hard courts been the surface once more.

The Madrid Arena in Spain was the next host of the event between 2006-2007 before the action moved onto the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in the Qatar capital of Doha where the action moved from indoor hard courts to outdoor hard courts.

The Turkish city of Istanbul was the next host between 2011-2013 with the action moving indoors again at the Sinan Erdem Dome.

The exciting city state of Singapore was the next host with the event taking place at the impressive Singapore Indoor Stadium between 2014-2018 before moving onto Shenzhen in China with the action set to be played at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center between 2019-2028.

As you would expect from a tournament where only the best of the best can qualify, the list of winners is a whose who of the sport.

The first couple of decades were dominated by US stars with stars such as Chris Evert (who won the inaugural event), Tracy Evett and Martina Navratilova (who has won the singles event on 8 occasions) enjoying success.

The 1980’s and 1990’s saw European stars enjoy the most success with the likes of Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis all enjoying success.

The 2000’s saw stars such as Justine Henin, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams all enjoy picking up the title whilst Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki and Ashley Barty have all enjoyed success in more recent times.

The tournament also features a doubles event that also offers great action between the best and most inform pairings form the WTA Tour.
