History of the Indian Wells Masters

1974–1976: The tournament’s beginnings

The tournament’s roots stretch back to 1974, when an early version of the event was established in the Coachella Valley region of Southern California. The competition developed into the American Airlines Tennis Games and, in 1976, found a home at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs. Jimmy Connors won the men’s singles title that year, defeating Roscoe Tanner 6–4, 6–4. The field included several notable players who would become major figures in tennis history, including Arthur Ashe, Rod Laver and Björn Borg. The early event was smaller than the modern BNP Paribas Open, but it laid the foundations for a tournament that would grow into one of the sport’s most important annual competitions.

1977–1980: Growth, new champions and changing venues

The tournament continued to establish itself during the late 1970s. In 1977, Brian Gottfried defeated world No. 1 Guillermo Vilas after losing the opening set, winning 2–6, 6–1, 6–3. Roscoe Tanner won consecutive titles in 1978 and 1979, defeating Raúl Ramírez in the 1978 final and Brian Gottfried in the 1979 final. The tournament moved to Rancho Mirage in 1979 and became known as the Congoleum Classic. The 1980 edition was disrupted by rain and did not produce a completed final, an early reminder that even the most carefully organised tennis tournament cannot negotiate with the weather.

1981–1986: The event establishes itself in the Coachella Valley

In 1981, the tournament moved to a newly opened stadium at the La Quinta Hotel, and Jimmy Connors won the title by defeating Ivan Lendl 6–3, 7–6. The event’s continued presence in the Coachella Valley owed much to tennis figure Charles Pasarell, who helped keep it in the region when moving it elsewhere was under consideration. The following year, France’s Yannick Noah defeated Lendl 6–4, 2–6, 7–5, ending Lendl’s remarkable 44-match winning streak. The tournament remained a significant stop on the professional circuit as its facilities and profile improved. Connors won again in 1984, while local wildcard Larry Stefanki produced one of the event’s most surprising victories in 1985. Stefanki, who was from nearby La Quinta, defeated David Pate 6–1, 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 to claim the title. Joakim Nyström won the 1986 championship by beating Yannick Noah 6–1, 6–3, 6–2.

1987–1989: Indian Wells becomes a destination for women’s tennis

In 1987, the tournament moved to Indian Wells, where a new facility at the Grand Champions Hotel provided improved tennis infrastructure. This move gave the competition a more permanent identity in the town that would eventually become synonymous with the event. It also marked a significant development for women’s tennis: a top-level women’s competition was held alongside the men’s event for the first time. Boris Becker defeated Stefan Edberg 6–4, 6–4, 7–5 to win the men’s title. Becker successfully defended his championship in 1988, defeating Emilio Sánchez in four sets, as the event adopted the name Newsweek Champions Cup. In 1989, Miloslav Mečíř defeated Yannick Noah in a five-set final, while Manuela Maleeva became the first women’s champion at the tournament, defeating Jenny Byrne 6–4, 6–1. These developments helped establish Indian Wells as a major destination for both men’s and women’s professional tennis.

1990–1995: A rise in international status

The tournament’s standing increased substantially in 1990, when the men’s competition became part of the elite category now known as the ATP Masters 1000. Stefan Edberg won that year’s men’s title, defeating Andre Agassi in four sets. Martina Navratilova captured the women’s championship, reflecting the event’s growing strength across both tours. In 1991, Jim Courier won the men’s title after a five-set final against Guy Forget, while Navratilova defended her women’s crown. The women’s competition subsequently adopted names including the Evert Cup, recognising former champion and tennis great Chris Evert’s association with the event. In 1994, Pete Sampras defeated Petr Korda in five sets to claim the men’s title, while Steffi Graf won the women’s championship. Sampras defended his title in 1995 by beating Andre Agassi, and Mary Joe Fernández won the women’s event. By this stage, Indian Wells had become an increasingly important fixture for leading players preparing for the major hard-court tournaments of the season.

1996–1999: The men’s and women’s events combine

A major structural change arrived in 1996, when the men’s and women’s tournaments were combined into a single event rather than being staged separately in sequence. The combined competition placed Indian Wells among a small group of major tournaments offering top-level men’s and women’s tennis at the same venue. Michael Chang and Steffi Graf won the singles titles that year. Chang defended his crown in 1997, recording his third tournament victory, while Lindsay Davenport captured the women’s championship. The men’s event continued to attract leading names, including Marcelo Ríos, who won in 1998 after a demanding four-set final against Greg Rusedski. Martina Hingis won the women’s title that year. In 1999, Serena Williams defeated Steffi Graf 6–3, 3–6, 7–5 to win her first Indian Wells title, a landmark result early in her extraordinary career. The men’s final went to Mark Philippoussis, who beat Carlos Moyà in five sets. The tournament’s reputation was growing, and organisers were already planning a venue capable of accommodating even larger crowds.

2000–2006: The Indian Wells Tennis Garden opens

The year 2000 marked one of the most important milestones in the tournament’s history. The competition moved to the newly built Indian Wells Tennis Garden, a large purpose-built complex with a main stadium holding approximately 16,100 spectators. The new site enabled the event to expand into a full two-week tournament and strengthened its position as a leading stop on the international tennis calendar. Alex Corretja won the men’s title in the inaugural year at the venue, while Lindsay Davenport claimed the women’s championship. The following years brought victories for Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and Roger Federer. Federer won his first Indian Wells title in 2004, defeating Tim Henman in straight sets, and then successfully defended it in 2005. In 2006, he defeated James Blake to complete a third consecutive championship. Maria Sharapova also won in 2006, beating Elena Dementieva. Despite financial challenges around that period, tennis legends and investors helped preserve the event, while the City of Indian Wells acquired adjacent land to support its future in the Coachella Valley.

2007–2013: Nadal, Djokovic and Federer shape a new era

Rafael Nadal won his first Indian Wells title in 2007, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. Djokovic gained his first tournament crown in 2008, while Ana Ivanovic won the women’s title. Nadal returned to the winner’s circle in 2009, and Vera Zvonareva claimed the women’s championship. In 2010, Ivan Ljubičić defeated Andy Roddick to take the men’s title, while Jelena Janković won the women’s event. The 2011 tournament introduced Hawk-Eye electronic line-calling technology across every match court, an important step in the event’s adoption of technology to assist officiating. Djokovic defeated Nadal in the final that year and went on to win again in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Federer added further titles in 2012 and 2017, bringing his total to five. Nadal won again in 2013, while Maria Sharapova secured her second Indian Wells title in the women’s competition. These years established the tournament as a familiar battleground for several of the greatest players of the modern era.

2014–2019: New facilities and fresh champions

The tournament continued to invest in its facilities and fan experience. A permanent Stadium 2, with seating for around 8,000 spectators, opened in 2014, alongside expanded dining options. Djokovic defeated Federer in a dramatic three-set final that year, and Flavia Pennetta won the women’s title. Djokovic repeated his success in 2015 and 2016, while Victoria Azarenka won the women’s championship in 2016. In 2017, Federer defeated fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka to secure his fifth Indian Wells title, and Elena Vesnina won the women’s competition. Juan Martín del Potro and Naomi Osaka emerged as champions in 2018, each capturing a first major-level title at the relevant tier of the professional tour. The 2019 edition delivered another memorable story when Canadian wildcard Bianca Andreescu defeated Angelique Kerber to become the first women’s wildcard entrant to win the Indian Wells title. Dominic Thiem won the men’s championship by defeating Federer in the final. These results reinforced the tournament’s reputation as a place where established stars could add to their legacies and emerging players could announce themselves.

2020–2022: A pandemic interruption and a homegrown champion

The 2020 BNP Paribas Open was cancelled shortly before the tournament was due to begin because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation was an unprecedented interruption in the modern era of the event. Tennis returned to Indian Wells in October 2021 rather than its traditional March slot, with Cameron Norrie winning the men’s title and Paula Badosa taking the women’s crown. The tournament returned to its usual March position in 2022. That year, American Taylor Fritz won the men’s championship, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final despite Nadal’s strong run of form. Iga Swiatek won the women’s title, beginning a successful Indian Wells chapter that would continue in 2024. Fritz’s victory was particularly significant for American fans because it ended a long wait for a home men’s singles champion in the desert.

2023–2026: A new generation takes centre stage

The tournament’s more recent history has featured a mixture of established champions and breakthrough performances. In 2023, Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s title without dropping a set, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final. Elena Rybakina claimed the women’s championship by beating Aryna Sabalenka. In 2024, Alcaraz successfully defended his title against Medvedev, becoming the first man to win consecutive Indian Wells championships since Djokovic’s three-title run from 2014 to 2016. Swiatek won the women’s title without losing a set during the tournament. Attendance reached 493,440 in 2024, a record at the time.

The 2025 edition produced two first-time Indian Wells champions. Britain’s Jack Draper won the men’s title, earning his first ATP Masters 1000 crown, while Mirra Andreeva won the women’s event at just 17 years old. The tournament recorded attendance of 504,268, surpassing half a million spectators for the first time. In 2026, Jannik Sinner captured his first Indian Wells title by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the men’s final, while Aryna Sabalenka won her first women’s title after saving championship point against Elena Rybakina. Attendance rose again to 527,626. These milestones show how the BNP Paribas Open continues to evolve while preserving the traditions that made it one of the sport’s most respected tournaments. Its history now spans generations of champions, major venue developments and dramatic matches, making Indian Wells much more than a stop on the tennis calendar: it is a defining event in the professional tennis season.
