The main stadium is known simply as Stadium 1 which can seat 16,100 people and there is a second main show court, known as Stadium 2 which also features televised matches during the Indians Wells Masters.
The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is located in the affluent Coachella Valley (Palm Springs) around 125 miles East of Los Angeles. Having been completed in 2000, there are 29 tennis courts which used as both match and practise courts throughout the Masters event.
Originally the tournament featured only men and it wasn’t until 1989 when the women’s tour first appeared at Indian Wells, when the women’s side of the event held the week before the men’s side.
In 1996 the event became one of the first outside of the majors to combine the men’s and women’s events, which again helped the event establish itself as one of the leading tennis tournaments on the world calendar.

ATP Indian Wells
The men’s event at Indian Wells, also known as the ATP Indian Wells, started life in 1974 when Australian star John Newcombe defeated home favourite Arthur Ashe to pick up the inaugural title.
The first American champions of the event was Jimmy Connors who won his first title at the 1976 edition by beating compatriot Roscoe Tanner in the final.
As you would expect from a tournament with the history and prestige of this one, the tournament has seen many of the worlds most famous tennis players pick up the title down the years including Boris Becker (of Germany), Stefan Edberg (of Sweden), Jim Courier (of the USA), Pete Sampras (of the USA), Marcelo Rios (of Chile), Andre Agassi (of the USA), Lleyton Hewitt (of Australia), Roger Federer (of Switzerland), Rafael Nadal (of Spain), Novak Djokovic (of Serbia) and Juan Martin del Potro (of Argentina).
A couple of British stars have come close to winning as both Tim Henman (in 2002 and 2004) and Andy Murray (in 2009) have finished runner up.
As with the majority of tennis tournaments, the ATP Indian Wells also features a doubles event that features a great mix of both singles stars doing double duty and doubles specialists.
The 2022 men’s singles final saw a huge upset as local favourite Taylor Fritz took on and defeated global superstar Rafael Nadal of Spain in straight sets.
In the men’s double event, the pairing of John Isner and Jack Sock made it a clean sweep of success for players from the USA as they defeated Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France in the final.

WTA Indian Wells
The women’s side of the tournament is known as the WTA Indian Wells and whilst its history is not quite a s long as the men’s tournament, it is now one of the biggest events held on the women’s WTA Tour outside of the Grand Slams.
The tournament was established in 1989 when it was a Tier III level event that featured Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria as its first champion.
By 1990, the tournament had moved to a Tier II level event where home favourite Martina Navratilova won the first event at this level.
Other winner sat this ranking included Monica Seles and Steffi Graf.
In 1997, the tournament stepped up against to become a Tier I level event and at this level it was another USA star that one the first edition when Lindsay Davenport defeated Irina Spirlea of Romania.
Other winners of the tournament during this period included Serna Williams, Daniela Hantuchova, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, and Ana Ivanovic.
In 2009, the WTA Indian Wells became a Premier Mandatory level event, which is the highest level on the WTA Tour aside from the Grand Slams and this meant that each and every tournament now featured all of the top stars of the sport and one of the biggest prize fund son the tour.
It was perhaps therefore surprising to see the relatively unknown Russian Vera Zvonareva defeat Serbian star Ana Ivanovic to pick up the first title at this level.
Other winners of the event at this level included household names such as Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, and Naomi Osaka.
The women’s side of the tournament also features a doubles event full of great doubles specialists and singles stars playing both events.
In the 2022 women’s final, it was Iga Swiatek of Poland who defeated Maria Sakkari of Greece in straight sets whilst the all-Chinese duo of Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan won the doubles event.
