Watch Stuttgart Tennis Live
The Stuttgart Open, currently known as the MercedesCup due to sponsorship reasons, is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s ATP World Tour where it is a 250-series ranked event.
The tournament has a history going back to 1916 and for most of that history the tournament was a clay court event but in 2015, the event swopped over to a Grass Court tournament and it now kick starts the Grass Court season.
Despite now being one of the build-up tournaments for Wimbledon, the Stuttgart Open is difficult to watch on TV without an expensive subscription to a pay tv channel but the good news for fans of tennis is that you can watch all of the action live form the Stuttgart Open via our live streaming partners.
With the number of Grass Court tournaments on the ATP Tour much less than other circuits, it makes the importance of all Grass Court events that bit more important so even though this is one of the smaller events it still attracts many of the top name players and with a good mix of youngsters and journeymen, it makes for an exciting tournament, all of which you can watch live online.
ATP Stuttgart
The Stuttgart Open, also known simply as the ATP Stuttgart, is one of the oldest tennis tournaments still in existence after been inaugurated way back in 1916 but unlike what is seemingly the norm for the sport, the tournament has moved from been one where the action takes place on clay courts to becoming a grass court event.
With the number of grass court tournament so small in the modern era, it is refreshing for a tournament to make that change but it is also great news for fans of grass court tennis that all of the action can be watched live online.
Unlike many tournaments with such a long history, the Stuttgart Open has remined based in the same city ever since its formation, with the switch from clay courts to grass courts in 2014/15 been the biggest change to the event.
The Tennis Club Weissenhof is the host of the tournament where a temporary stadium is built around the main court at the club in a similar way to Queens Club in London set up their event.
There is little information to the found on the early years of the tournament but in the pre-war era, it was mostly local players to participate and enjoy success.
5 of the first 6 winners came from either Germany or Austria but in the 1950’s the tournament stepped up to become a multinational event with winners from as far afield as the United States of America and Australia.
The 1960’s saw the first winners from Africa, with the South African trio of Gordon Forbes, Cliff Drysdale and Frew McMillan all enjoying title success at least once.
The late 1960’s also saw the first Asian winner with Ramanathan Krishanan of India defeating local favourite Detlev Nitsche in the 1968 final.
The 1970’s saw an emergence for German talent with 5 local stars staring in 6 straight wins but from the 1980’s onwards, the tournament has found itself well placed on the world tour and that has led to stars from across the globe winning with no player enjoying periods of dominance.
Whilst ranking points, placement on the calendar and the prize fund of an event can give a massive indication as to the quality of any tournament, arguably the bet way to know how good an event is, is to look at the players who have gone on to win the event and from that you can easily see that the Stuttgart Open tennis tournament is one that is worth watching.
Amongst the household names to have won in Stuttgart are Roy Emerson (Australia), Bjorn Borg (Sweden), Ivan Lendl (then Czechoslovakia), Andre Agassi (the United States of America), Goran Ivanisevic (then Yugoslavia), Gustavo Kuerten (Brazil), Rafael Nadal (Spain), David Ferrer (Spain), Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina), Jeremy Chardy (France), Fabio Fognini (Italy), (Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain), Dominic Thiem (Australia), Lucas Pouille (France) and Roger Federer (Switzerland).
Up until 2021, Spain’s Rafa Nadal was the only player to win both the clay court event and the grass court events at the ATP Stuttgart Open.
The 2022 edition of the event, known by its sponsored name of the BOSS Open, made headlines around the world as it saw Britain’s own Andy Murray return to the top of the sport when he made it through to the final against Matteo Berrettini, but it was the Italian star who ran out the favourites.
As with the vast majority of tournaments on the world ATP Tour, the Stuttgart Open also features a doubles event alongside the main singles event and the great news for all fans of doubles tennis action is that you can also watch all of that action live as well via the tennis live stream services featured on this page.
The doubles tournament features a good mix of both doubles specialists and single stars who are pulling double duty and it is in the doubles event that the first British winner at the Stuttgart Open occurred when Jamie Murray (alongside partner Bruno Soares from Brazil) defeated Oliver Marach (from Austria) and Mate Pavic (from Croatia), to win the 2017 title.
