History of the Shanghai MastersHistory
The history of the Shanghai Masters is relatively young compared with iconic tournaments such as Wimbledon and the US Open, but its roots in elite tennis in China stretch back further. Shanghai previously hosted the Tennis Masters Cup, the season-ending championship for the leading men’s players, from 2005 to 2008. That event was held at the Qi Zhong Stadium and helped establish Shanghai as an important destination on the international tennis calendar.
The modern Shanghai Masters began in 2009 as a new ATP Masters 1000 tournament. The inaugural edition was won by Britain’s Andy Murray, who defeated Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in the final. Murray returned the following year and successfully defended his title in 2010, defeating Roger Federer in the final. He therefore became the first player to win the Shanghai Masters twice.
The tournament quickly developed an excellent reputation among players. From 2009 through 2013, the Shanghai Masters was voted the ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year by the players. Winning that award in each of its first five editions was a remarkable achievement and demonstrated that the event had rapidly established itself as one of the best-organised tournaments on the ATP Tour.
Novak Djokovic won his first Shanghai Masters title in 2012, defeating Andy Murray in the final. Djokovic then returned to the top of the podium in 2013, defeating Juan Martín del Potro. The Serbian’s success would eventually become one of the defining features of the tournament’s history.
Roger Federer claimed his first Shanghai Masters crown in 2014. He defeated Gilles Simon in the final and added another Shanghai title three years later in 2017. His second championship came against Rafael Nadal, giving the tournament one of its most memorable finals and placing another chapter in the Federer-Nadal rivalry inside the Shanghai record books.
Djokovic continued to build his extraordinary Shanghai record. He won the title again in 2015, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, before adding a fourth championship in 2018 with victory over Borna Ćorić. With four singles titles, Djokovic remains the most successful singles champion in Shanghai Masters history. He also holds the tournament record for most match wins.
Other champions have helped give the tournament a genuinely international roll of honour. Murray, Djokovic and Federer were followed by Daniil Medvedev, who won the 2019 edition. Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev in the final during a period when the Russian was establishing himself as one of the most formidable hard-court players on the ATP Tour.
The tournament then faced an unprecedented interruption. The Shanghai Masters was not held in 2020, 2021 or 2022 because of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions. This meant the event disappeared from the ATP calendar for three consecutive seasons, breaking a run that had otherwise established Shanghai as a regular fixture on the autumn swing.
The Shanghai Masters returned in 2023, marking the tournament’s first edition since 2019. The comeback also brought a major change to the competition format. The singles draw expanded to 96 players, matching the larger format used at several other Masters 1000 events. Hubert Hurkacz won the 2023 title, defeating Andrey Rublev in the final. Hurkacz entered the tournament as the No. 16 seed and became the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament’s history at that point.
The 2024 Shanghai Masters produced one of the most anticipated finals in recent tournament history. Jannik Sinner faced four-time champion Novak Djokovic, with both players arriving with plenty at stake. Sinner won 7-6(4), 6-3 to claim the championship. The Italian’s victory was particularly notable because it came against Djokovic, who was chasing his 100th career ATP singles title.
Sinner’s victory also made him the youngest Shanghai Masters champion at the time, aged 23. The result added another Masters 1000 trophy to his increasingly impressive collection and reinforced his position among the leading players of the new generation.
The 2025 Shanghai Masters then produced arguably the biggest surprise in the tournament’s history. Valentin Vacherot, ranked No. 204 in the world, reached the final and defeated his cousin Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The unusual family final was already a remarkable storyline, but Vacherot’s victory made it even more extraordinary.
Vacherot became the first player representing Monaco to win an ATP singles title and the lowest-ranked player ever to win an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. His triumph demonstrated exactly why the Shanghai Masters has become such an appealing tournament: even with the world’s best players in the draw, an unexpected run can completely rewrite the record books.
Across its history, the Shanghai Masters has therefore evolved from a new addition to the ATP calendar into one of the most important tournaments in men’s tennis. Its distinctive Qizhong Tennis Center, international player field, strong attendance and position within the Asian swing have helped make ATP Shanghai a major fixture rather than simply another stop on the schedule.
The tournament’s record books now feature some of the defining names of the modern era, including Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Medvedev, Hurkacz and Sinner. At the same time, the extraordinary 2025 success of Vacherot showed that the next chapter does not necessarily belong to the favourites. That combination of established champions, rising stars and potential upsets is precisely what has made the Shanghai Masters one of the most compelling events on the ATP Tour.
