The Shanghai Masters is a professional Snooker tournament that is an invitation only event. Dominic Dale was the first winner of the tournament back in 2007 but since then many of the sport’s biggest names have gone on to pick up the title in Shanghai with the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ali Carter, Mark Selby, John Higgins, Kyren Wilson and home favourite Ding Junhui all amongst past winners.

Shanghai Masters Snooker
The Shanghai Masters is one of the most historic tournaments to be held in China, the emerging powerhouse of the sport after it was first introduced for the 2007-2008 season.
That made the tournament just the 2nd ever ranking event to be held in the country but unfortunately it has been far from plain sailing for the tournament although with one of the biggest prize funds outside of the Triple Crown events, it is a tournament that continues to attract the sports biggest stars and it is an event that continues to be a must watch for all Snooker fans.
The inaugural edition of the tournament took place in 2007 when it was an all Welsh final with Dominic Dale besting Ryan Day by 10 frames to 6 to pick up the first ever title in Shanghai.
The next 4 winners all came from England (Ricky Walden in 2008, Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2009, Ali Carter in 2010 and Mark Selby in 2011), before John Higgins broke the run in 2012.
Liang Wenbo became the first local player to reach the final in a losing effort to the Rocket but in 2013, Ding Junhui went one further by winning the title against Xiao Guodong in an all Chinese final.
Other winners of the event as a ranking tournament include Stuart Bingham (England) and Kyren Wilson.
In 2018, the tournament stepped down from a ranking event but that didn’t stop stars turning up with Ronnie O’Sullivan winning both the 2018 and 2019 edition to go along with his win the final ranking event in 2018 to make it a hat-trick of wins.
Despite the number of great stars who not only play in the event but that produce much see moments and actions, it can be difficult for fans to watch the action live on British tv.
