The Washington Open, also known as the ATP Washington and the WTA Washington, is a professional tennis tournament held jointly on the women’s WTA Tour and the men’s ATP Tour where it is an ATP World Tour 500 series ranked event for the men and a WTA International Tournament ranked event for the women.

ATP Washington

The men’s tournament, now known as the ATP Washington tournament, was first established in 1969 and was originally known as the Washington Star International between 1969 – 1981, then the Sovran Classic between 1982-1992 and then the Legg Mason Tennis Classic between 1994-2011 before becoming the Washington Open (Citi Open).

As you would expect from a tournament with such a long history and so much prestige around it, there have bene a number of star players to have played and won the tournament down the years.

Local favourite, Andre Agassi, won the event on a record 5 occasions between 1990 – 1999 whilst fellow American star Arthur Ashe enjoyed success in the early years with Jimmy Connors and Guillermo Vilas dominating the 1970’s.

In 2003, Tim Henman became the first British player to win the event, with Andy Murray losing in the 2006 final.

Since then, there have been a few players who have won the event on more than one occasion including Andy Roddick (who won on 3 occasions), Juan Martin del Potro (who won back to back tournaments in 2008 and 09 as well as 2013), Alexander Zverev (who also won back to back event sin 2017-18) and then Nick Kyrgios won in 2019 and 2022.

WTA Washington

The women’s tournament, now known as the WTA Washington, was established much after the men’s event with the inaugural tournament taking place in 2011.

The women’s event was actually first held in the nearby College Park in Maryland where it was known as the Citi Open before it joined the men’s tournament to create the combine Washington Open.

The women’s event has been dominated by Europeans, with those from East Europe doing especially well although local favourites Sloane Stephens and Jessica Pegula have given home fans something to cheer with wins in 2015 and 2019, respectively.

The WTA edition of the event didn’t take place in both 2020 and 2021 but on its return in 2022, it was the relative unknown Liudmila Samsonova who picked up the title.

Citi Open

The event, which takes place at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Washington DC, the United State of America capital city, is played on outdoor hard courts.

Located in Rock Creek Park, the venue is named after William H. G. Fitzgerald who was a private investor and was also a philanthropist who helped set up the tournament and interestingly he also served as the United States of America Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland.

The complex has 15 hard courts, 10 clay courts and 5 indoor heated courts which are mostly used in the cold and long Washington winters whilst the main stadium court which is used for the ATP and WTA Washington event is capable of holding around 7,500 fans including 31 suites for corporate guests.

First inaugurated in 1969, the event is now seen as a warm up tournament for upcoming US Open Grand Slam, which helps it attract many of the world’s biggest names but there is also a good mix of top 100 players and up and comers which makes for an interesting tournament and that can often create shocks.

Whilst the tournament attracts many of the sports biggest names and gives Grand Slam level matches, it can be difficult to watch action from the event live, especially without an expensive and ongoing subscription to pay tv sports channels.

Thankfully, there is now another option where you can watch all of the action from the American capital live online via your phone, tablet, laptop, or computer and best of all there is no need for an expensive subscription.

All of the live streaming services on this page allow you to pick and choose to watch all of the matches from both the ATP Washington Open and the WTA Washington Open and whilst you must be aged 18 or over to use the online bookmakers websites and you must also have a deposited account, there is no need to bet on the action.

With the Citi Open acting as a key warm up event for the US Open, one of the 4 Grand Slam tournaments, it is highly important for all of the players competing as they look to build form and confidence ahead of the major but thanks to that, the world ranking points on offer and the large prize fund available, the tournament is also well worth winning in its own right so it is no surprise to see many of the matches from the event been of the highest calibre, especially when it gets to the semi-final and final stages of the Washington Open tennis event.

As any fan of the sport will be able to attest to, tennis is one of the fastest sports in the world in terms of the action out on the court and demands the absolute best levels of fitness from each and every athlete that participates.

When you mix in the incredible skill of the players and you have a fantastic must watch spectacle no matter who is playing but with so many stars taking part at this tournament and with the action taking place on hard courts, you can be assured or in anots of entertaining tennis, which is well worth registering with one of the ATP Washington or WTA Washington live streaming services featured on this very page.
