The Brisbane International is a professional tennis tournament on women’s WTA Tour.

On the women’s world tennis tour it is a WTA Premier level event.

The tournament, owned by Tennis Australia and taking place at the Queensland Tennis Centre, is seen as a warm up event for the Australian Open which takes place later in the month.

In a State and city dominated by Rugby League, this tournament brings all of the local attention to the sport of Tennis.

The Brisbane International has a long history going back to 1972 but back then the tournament was held in Adelaide, with the switch to the North only happening in 2009.

For much of the tournaments history, there has been a ATP Tour event at the tournament as well as great WTA action.

Recent winners of the men’s event have included Milos Raonic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray whilst recent winners of the women’s has included Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Pliskova which just highlights the quality of players on show at the tournament.

WTA Brisbane

The Brisbane International, which is also known as the WTA Brisbane, is a tournament that has both a long history and also a short history and it is a tournament that has been a tournament on the men’s ATP Tour but is now a major early tournament on the women’s WTA Tour.

Those changes, as well as the change from been played in the city of Adelaide in Southern Australia to been played in the Northern city of Brisbane means that it is difficult to know just what the history and prestige of the tournament is.

Thankfully, the current version of the tournament has already started t build its own reputation thanks to a host of hug stars not just playing at the event but also going on to win the title.

The current version of the event is played at the Queensland Tennis Centre which is located in the Tennyson region of Brisbane in Queensland- a city and state dominated by the sport of Rugby League but for one week a year all eyes are on the sport of Tennis instead of the NRL or the State of Origin Series.

The complex features a hugely impressive, roofed stadium to give a big tournament feel for the event that is ranked as a WTA Premier level on the event with a pretty healthy prize fund.

The tournament is usually held in the run up to the Australian Open, with all of the action also been played on a similar plexicushion (hard court) surface.

The winners of the Brisbane International almost read as a whose who of the WTA Tour with the likes of Victoria Azarenka (of Belarus who won the inaugural event in 2009 and in 2016), Kim Clijsters (of Belgium who own in 2010), Serena Williams (of the United States of America who won in 2013 and 2014), Maria Sharapova (of Russia who own in 2015) and Karolina Pliskova (of the Czech Republic who won in 2017,2019 and 2020).

As with the majority of tennis tournaments played on the main WTA Tour, the Brisbane International also features a doubles event, which can also be watched live.

If you are a fan of tennis you will likely know that it can be difficult to watch tennis tournaments such as the WTA Brisbane live on British television as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that has tennis coverage, you will likely only be able to watch a select number of matches live.

That can often lead to fans missing out on watching their favourite player or on watching the match up from the tournament that they were looking forward to the most.

Thankfully, there is now a way to watch all of the great action live from Brisbane International no matter if you want to watch the tournament opener or the WTA Brisbane final.
