WTA Linz

The Linz Open, also known as the WTA Linz is a professional tennis tournament that takes place in the Austria city of Linz.

The event is hosted by the TipsArena Linz where all of the matches are played on indoor hard courts.

The tournament has a long history full of changes to just about every aspect of it but the event nowadays is an International level event, with a relatively modest prize fund.

The event was established in 1987, when the tournament was played in the Upper Austrian city of Wels.

The tournament started life as an ITF level event and it was mostly local players who participated and won the event during this era including Barbara Paulus of Austria who own the inaugural tournament at the 1987 edition.

Other winners of the ITF event included Eva Sviglerova (of the Czech Republic), Marion Maruska (of Austria) and Monika Kratochvilova (of the Czech Republic).

In 1991, the tournament moved to the city of Linz, which is the capital of the Upper Austria region, where it was initially a Tier III level event.

The first winner at this new ranking was Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Switzerland with other winners at the Tier III level including Natalia Medvedeva (of the Ukraine), Sabine Appelmans (of Belgium), Jana Novotna (of the Czech Republic) and Chanda Rubin (of the United States of America).

In 1998 it was promoted to a Tier II level event and featured Jana Novotna as the first title winner at this new level.

Other winners at this ranking included Lindsay Davenport (of the USA), Justine Henin (of Belgium), Ai Sugiyama (of Japan), Amelie Mauresmo (of France), Nadia Petrova (of Russia), Maria Sharapova (of Russia), Daniela Hantuchova (of Slovakia) and Ana Ivanovic (of Serbia).

The tournament took on the new ranking of a WTA International level event in 2009 and has continued to see many big stars winning the tournament with household names to win the title including Ana Ivanovic, Petra Kvitova (of the Czech Republic), Victoria Azarenka (of Belarus), Angelique Kerber (of Germany), Coco Gauff (of the USA) and Aryna Sabalenka (of Belarus).

As with the majority of tennis tournaments on the women’s WTA Tour, the Linz Open also features a doubles event, which can also be watched live.

The doubles side of the tournament features a mixture of doubles specialists and singles stars doing double duty.
